Article Abstract

The food processing industry and biomedical science research are relying on the low limit of detection (LOD) for hydrogen peroxide (HO). Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are excellent for biochemical sensing applications due to their excellent signal amplification capability. The paper describes  a way of detecting HO through the use of stacked poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): bromothymol blue (PEDOT: BTB)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) as the semiconducting channel of the OECT. The HO sensor presents an ultra-low LOD, down to 1.8 × 10 M, due to the synergistic effect of the Nernst potential generated by the platinum gate electrode catalyzing HO and the Nernst potential generated by the interaction between BTB molecules and hydrogen ions, the by-product of HO catalysis. A microsystemwith a signal processing circuit and a mobile app for the sensor has been developed, and they are then tested on commercial milk samples to verify their reliability. Since the majority of enzyme-catalyzed reactions generate or use HO in biochemical reactions, the methodology is applicable not only to the detection of HO but also to the detection of analytes based on enzyme-catalyzed reactions. For demonstration, glucose detection with a LOD of down to 8.82 × 10 M is also presented.

Heat flux sensors based on the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) have emerged as a promising solution for achieving thin and flexible designs. ANE-based heat flux sensors typically employ thermopile structures composed of two ANE materials with opposite signs, connected in series to enhance sensing performance. However, a mismatch in the Seebeck coefficient between the two ANE materials causes a considerable offset voltage due to the Seebeck effect (SE) under oblique heat flux.

Lifetimes of Ag/AgCl electrodes determine whether it is possible to monitor the concentration of chloride ions in marine concrete structures. A novel manufacturing method, pulse current electrodeposition at a low current density, was proposed to prepare the long-lifetime Ag/AgCl electrode. Influences of electrodeposition duration were investigated on the Nernst response, exchange current density, and lifetime of Ag/AgCl electrodes, and the properties were also compared to those of the ones electrodeposited by applying constant currents.

The discovery of magnetic Weyl semimetals (WSMs) has drawn significant interest due to their exceptional topological properties and anomalous transport behaviors, presenting exciting possibilities for advanced technological applications. Co-based Heusler compounds, with their unique band structures, have emerged as key materials for exploring the interplay between magnetism and topology. In this work, we perform a detailed first-principles study on Co2-xCrMnGe Heusler alloys (0⩽⩽1), proposing new candidates with significantly enhanced nontrivial transport properties.

Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is central to energy conversion processes in fuel cells, electrolysis, and biological systems. According to the Nernst equation, the equilibrium potential of PCET shifts by around -60 mV/pH relative to the standard hydrogen electrode at room temperature. Here, we reveal significant deviations from this expected Nernstian behavior in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at Pt(111) in HSO/MSO (M = Li, Cs) solutions, with a pronounced dependence on the cation identity, whereas Nernstian behavior is retained in HClO/LiClO solutions.

Magnetic thin films and nanostructures present a unique challenge for a range of thermal measurements, with important consequences for both fundamental physics and material science and applications. This paper reviews the unique capabilities for measurement and control of these systems using thermal gradients applied using micro- and nanofabricated silicon-nitride membrane platforms. Supporting a thin film or nanostructure removes bulk heat sinks from the tiny structure, enabling otherwise challenging or impossible measurements including thermal conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, Peltier coefficient, magnon drag, both the anomalous and planar Nernst effect, specific heat, and novel manifestations of thermally assisted spin transport.
