The qualified presumption of safety (QPS) process was developed to assess the safety of microorganisms used in food and feed chains. During the period covered by this Statement, no new information warranted changes to the status of previously recommended QPS taxonomic units. The QPS list was updated to verify the correctness of the names and the completeness of synonyms.

Although nontoxigenic usually stands in the shadow of the two serogroups (O1 and O139) that cause pandemic cholera, its role in human pathology is increasingly recognized and described in the literature. The habitat of these pathogens is brackish seawater or even freshwater, and the infections caused by them include contact with these waters or consumption of seafood originating in this habitat, which is constantly expanding because of global warming. This habitat extension is a typical example of climate change's impact on infectious diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • * This study tested the effectiveness of Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) for rapid and cost-efficient identification of foodborne pathogens, comparing various DNA extraction and sequencing methods.
  • * Results showed that ONT could accurately identify pathogens and their characteristics, but some variations in genome assembly were noted, indicating the need for further refinement of the process.

In northern Tamaulipas, México, the contamination of corn by toxigenic fungi reduces grain production and quality. Corn contaminated by mycotoxins puts humans and livestock at risk. Continuous monitoring of the sanitary quality of grain at harvest and in storage will define preventive and corrective strategies for contamination by mycotoxigenic fungi.

Shiga toxin-producing (STEC) are the main etiological agents of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Good clinical management of STEC infections and HUS depends on early, rapid, and accurate diagnosis. Here, we have developed and evaluated the first multiplex and glycoprotein-based immunochromatographic test for the detection of IgM antibodies against the O-polysaccharide of the lipopolysaccharide of O157 and O145 in human serum samples.
