We present a speech motor control model that integrates optimal feedback control (OFC) for movement planning and execution with a biomechanical model of the vocal tract. The OFC model was designed to optimize a cost function that combines motor effort and the achievement of multisensory goal zones. We show that the model can account for various aspects of speech production: kinematic properties, coarticulation, and sensorimotor integration.

Somatosensory-mediated reactions play a fundamental role in adapting to environmental changes, particularly through long-latency responses (LLRs), rapid corrective muscle responses (50-100 ms) following limb perturbations that account for limb biomechanics and task goals. We investigated how smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEMs), which are slow eye movements used to track moving objects, influence LLRs of the upper and lower limb during mechanical interactions with moving objects. In the first experiment, participants stood and stabilized their arm against a colliding virtual object.

Background: Unstable load training (ULT) has become increasingly popular for its potential to enhance muscle activation, strength, and neural development. Unlike unstable surface training (UST), ULT introduces instability through an unsteady load. Studies suggest ULT increases muscle activation in both stabilizing and primary muscles, particularly in multi-joint exercises.

Orthopedic surgeons now have multiple alignment strategies for total knee arthroplasty. Unlike the era dominated by mechanical alignment, the availability of diverse paradigms introduces both flexibility and potential uncertainty in selecting optimal lower limb alignment. The published literature does not show marked differences in outcomes between standard mechanical and newer alternative alignment strategies, which is at once reassuring and frustrating.
