Article Abstract

This study investigates how both the body part used to control a VR avatar and the avatar's appearance affect redirection detection thresholds. We conducted experiments comparing hand and foot manipulation of two types of avatars: a hand-shaped avatar and an abstract spherical avatar. Our results show that, irrespective of the body part used, the redirection detection threshold increased by 21% when using the hand avatar compared to the abstract avatar. Additionally, when the avatar's position was redirected toward the body midline, the detection threshold increased by 49% compared to redirection away from the midline. No significant differences in detection thresholds were observed between the hand and foot manipulations. These findings suggest that avatar appearance and redirection direction significantly influence user perception in VR environments, offering valuable insights for the design of full-body VR interactions and human augmentation systems.

Background: Romosozumab is a sclerostin-inhibiting monoclonal antibody that is effective and safe for anabolic treatment in patients with osteoporosis. Its main adverse effects are local; the severity of these injection-site reactions in clinical trials was generally mild.

Case Report: We present a case of a 71-year-old Colombian woman with osteoporosis at very high risk of fractures with no relevant history of drug allergies.

Adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) are leading vectors in gene therapy that have demonstrated great potential in combating a wide range of human diseases. To enhance specificity and reduce dosing requirements, antibody-retargeted AAVs have emerged as a promising strategy to redirect vectors to novel receptors, thereby achieving improved efficacy and safety. However, effective characterization of AAVs and AAV-antibody complexes is complicated by heterogeneities that arise from variations in capsid protein assembly, genome integrity, and antibody decorations, demanding high-resolution techniques beyond traditional methods.

Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a tobacco-associated neuroendocrine tumor comprising ~15% of lung cancers (~150,000 cases/year). For decades, outcomes stagnated: most patients present with extensive-stage disease, screening rarely detects early tumors, surgery is seldom feasible, and platinum-etoposide remained the first-line standard with median overall survival (OS) <12 months. Radiotherapy (including consolidative thoracic RT) and prophylactic cranial irradiation or MRI surveillance offered incremental gains.

Fluorescence microscopy is indispensable for visualizing biological structures and dynamics, yet its efficiency is limited-over half of emitted photons fall outside the objective's numerical aperture and go undetected. Here, we introduce Paired-Objectives Photon Enhancement (POPE) microscopy, which increases photon collection efficiency by up to two-fold using a single excitation source, single detector, and dual objectives. By integrating a 4f optical system with a reflective mirror positioned opposite the objective in an inverted microscope, POPE redirects a substantial portion of otherwise lost photons into the detection pathway.

The precise and efficient sorting of microscopic particles is critical in diverse fields, including biomedical diagnostics, drug development, and environmental monitoring. Fluorescence imaging-activated sorting refers to a strategy where fluorescence images are used to dynamically identify target particles and trigger selective manipulation for sorting purposes. In this study, we introduce a novel microfluidic particle sorting platform that combines optical tweezers with real-time fluorescence imaging for detection.
