Article Abstract

The morphological distribution of absorbent in composites is equally important with absorbents for the overall electromagnetic properties, but it is often ignored. Herein, a comprehensive consideration including electromagnetic component regulation, layered arrangement structure, and gradient concentration distribution was used to optimize impedance matching and enhance electromagnetic loss. On the microscale, the incorporation of magnetic Ni nanoparticles into MXene nanosheets (Ni@MXene) endows suitable intrinsic permittivity and permeability. On the macroscale, the layered arrangement of Ni@MXene increases the effective interaction area with electromagnetic waves, inducing multiple reflection/scattering effects. On this basis, according to the analysis of absorption, reflection, and transmission (A-R-T) power coefficients of layered composites, the gradient concentration distribution was constructed to realize the impedance matching at low-concentration surface layer, electromagnetic loss at middle concentration interlayer and microwave reflection at high-concentration bottom layer. Consequently, the layered gradient composite (LG5-10-15) achieves complete absorption coverage of X-band at thickness of 2.00-2.20 mm with RL of -68.67 dB at 9.85 GHz in 2.05 mm, which is 199.0%, 12.6%, and 50.6% higher than non-layered, layered and layered descending gradient composites, respectively. Therefore, this work confirms the importance of layered gradient structure in improving absorption performance and broadens the design of high-performance microwave absorption materials.

Integration of ultrathin, high-quality gate insulators is critical to the success of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor transistors in next-generation nanoelectronics. Here, we investigate the impact of atomic layer deposition (ALD) precursor choice on the nucleation and growth of insulators on monolayer MoS. Surveying a series of aluminum (AlO) precursors, we observe that increasing the length of the ligands reduces the nucleation delay of alumina on monolayer MoS, a phenomenon that we attribute to improved van der Waals dispersion interactions with the 2D material.

Division of Biology, Chemistry, and Materials Science, Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories, US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

This work assesses the current characterization framework of single-use personal protective equipment (PPE) per recognized consensus standards and presents a novel quantitative approach to refining characterization of barrier materials and predicting PPE performance. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and image analysis software (Diameter J) were used to examine the microscopic fiber and pore structure of filter layers of surgical N95 filtering facepiece respirators, before and after exposure to chemicals used in decontamination modalities (vaporized hydrogen peroxide or ozone). The effect of porosity on penetration was assessed by bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) testing.

In contrast to metal ions that have been routinely used to construct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), anions have rarely been used as essential coordination centers in supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs). In this work, we present a SOF, , based on the coordination of chloride anions and a flexible oligopyrrole. Owing to the multiple interactions between individual oligopyrrole molecules and an A-B-C-style stacking of the 2D honeycomb layers, crystalline exhibits reasonable thermal stability and retains its structure upon desolvation.

Bimorph soft actuators, traditionally composed of two materials with distinct responses to external stimuli, often face durability challenges due to structural incompatibility. Here, we propose an alternative design employing free-standing, isostructural heterogeneous Janus (IHJ) films that harmonize stability with high actuation efficiency. These IHJ films were fabricated through a vacuum self-assembly process, consisting of TiCT MXene nanosheets and hybrid graphene oxide (GO)-biomass bacterial cellulose (BC), with a well-matched two-dimensional lattice structure.
