Article Abstract

This study evaluated the fruit by-products (peels, seeds, and fibrous strands) from 11 pumpkin genotypes cultivated in Greece aiming to valorize them as natural sources of bioactive compounds. Five compounds, including (-)-epicatechin and chicoric acid isomers, were identified in peels, while seeds and fibrous strands mainly contained (-)-epicatechin. Organic acids and tocopherols varied significantly among genotypes, with oxalic, quinic, and malic acids being predominant. Total tocopherols content (mg/100 g) ranged up to 7.38 ± 0.03 in fibrous strands, 30.7 ± 0.2 in peels, and 14.58 ± 0.09 in seeds. Extracts exhibited potent antioxidant activity, particularly the seeds of genotypes "V5" and "V6", and strong antimicrobial effects, notably the peels of "V2 T" and "V11", which showed significant inhibition of microbial strains. These findings contribute to the advancement of sustainable practices in the agro-industrial waste management, as well as to the production of functional natural ingredients for various industrial applications.

This article describes the pathological findings of ten blue sharks (Prionace glauca) stranded after fatal interactions with swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the western Mediterranean. Multiple rostral fragments were found using diagnostic imaging techniques (X-rays and Computed Axial Tomography) or during necropsy, associated with severe injuries in all animals. The most affected organ was the encephalon, showing meningeal and brain hemorrhages, encephalomalacia, and acute encephalitis, followed by the eyes, which exhibited hemorrhage and acute panophthalmitis.

Gynecomastia correction often requires removal of both a glandular and fat component. Aggressive tissue removal bears the risk of causing irregularities, areolar scars, or a flat chest. Insufficient removal, on the other hand, causes recurrence.

Purpose: To describe the morphology and histopathology of the vitreoretinal interface (VRI) in eyes with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) and epiretinal membrane (ERM) (pERM) in comparison to eyes without PEX and idiopathic ERM (iERM).

Methods:  Specimens of ERM and internal limiting membrane (ILM) were obtained during pars plana vitrectomy with membrane peeling from 10 symptomatic eyes with pERM and 16 eyes with iERM. Specimens were processed as flat-mounts for immunocytochemistry and prepared by ultrathin series sectioning for transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Supramolecular biomaterials based on 1D supramolecular polymers in water replicate the fibrous and dynamic structures of natural architectures. Peptides, valued for their biocompatibility, are commonly employed as building blocks for supramolecular biomaterials, often in combination with large aromatic or hydrogen-bonding groups at the N-terminus to improve their structural stability. Herein, the self-assembly properties of two β-sheet peptides combined with the ureido-pyrimidinone self-dimerizing motif in aqueous solution are investigated in detail.

Black holes in hand anatomy: exploring research areas in hand surgery.

J Hand Surg Eur Vol

The term 'black holes' has been applied to anatomical areas needing further study. The historical account (D'AW Thompson, Cambridge University Press, 1917) applies mathematical principles to explain how physical forces influence the morphology of bone, tendon, ligament and fascia. The trabecular structure of bone is maintained by force loading, providing a map of strain concentrations to better understand fracture fixation and bone healing.
