Article Abstract

: Toe flexor strength (TFS) has been determined to evaluate the toe flexor muscle function. However, it is unclear how strength and size relationships of toe flexor muscles vary depending on the toes intended for force production. We aimed to clarify this by examining the relationship between TFS and toe flexor muscle size, and hypothesized TFS produced by all toes (TFS-All), the great toe (TFS-Great) and lesser toes (TFS-Lesser) would be specifically associated with the size of the muscles specialized in each corresponding toe flexion. : The maximal anatomical cross-sectional area (ACSA) of each toe flexor muscle was measured by magnetic resonance imaging in twenty healthy young men. The three types of TFS were measured using a custom-made toe push dynamometer. : TFS-All was significantly associated with ACSA of the adductor hallucis transverse head (ADDH-TH) ( = 0.58, = 0.01) and flexor hallucis brevis (FHB) ( = 0.56, = 0.01). TFS-Great and TFS-Lesser were not significantly correlated with ACSA of any analyzed muscles, except for a significant correlation between TFS-Lesser and dorsal/plantar interosseous muscle ( = 0.48, = 0.03). : The size of two plantar intrinsic foot muscles, FHB, anatomically specialized for the great toe flexion, and ADDH-TH, supplementary flex the great toe, may be the determinant for TFS-All. However, TFS-Great and TFS-Lesser are not associated with the size of the muscles anatomically specialized in each corresponding toe flexion, perhaps due to difficulty in maximally and separately activating individual muscles (i.e., neural/anatomical reasons) during the TFS-Great and TFS-Lesser production.

Background: By stimulating proprioceptive receptors, muscle vibration helps understand the crucial role of proprioception in gait control. From the literature, variability in responses during the stance phase across studies may be due to protocol differences, such as lighting conditions that affect visual information. This study aimed to investigate the interaction between vision and proprioceptive information from ankle and neck muscles over the gait cycle during treadmill walking.

Objectives: This study investigated the relationships between ankle dorsiflexion, first toe strength, and core stability in male and female futsal players.

Methods: Fourteen male professional players from the Spanish first division and 22 female players from the second division were evaluated. Ankle dorsiflexion range of motion was measured using the LegMotion® system.

Background: Older adults living with Alzheimer's disease (AD) have impaired executive functions and can therefore have greater difficulty following the instructions of assessment tests. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the intra- and inter-rater reliability and criterion validity of the adapted Five-Times Sit-to-Stand (5STS), 30-Second Sit-to-Stand (30STS) and Calf-Rise Senior (CRS) tests for the assessment of lower limb muscle strength in older adults living with AD.

Methods: A methodological study was conducted.

The plantar plate (PP) tear of the second metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) is a common cause of forefoot pain in clinical practice. The PP is the main stabilizing structure of the joint and, together with the collateral ligaments, is the key to maintaining the stability of the MTPJ. Many surgical procedures have been described to repair PP tears.
