Regional and global environmental challenges have become increasingly complex and require broader solutions than a single discipline can provide. Although there is a growing need for interdisciplinary research, many graduate education programs still train students within the confines of a particular discipline or specialty. The Ridge 2 Reef research traineeship program at the University of California, Irvine, aimed to provide transferable and interdisciplinary skill training to prepare graduate students from different disciplines to address current and future environmental challenges. The program achieved its goals through a 'culture of improvement' that ensured trainee needs shaped program management and curriculum. Due to trainee feedback and leaders dedicated to program improvement, there was a complete course overhaul during the first two years of the program, resulting in a final curriculum structure that was more effective and aligned with revised program goals. Program evaluations suggest that the flexibility of the program, diversity of training, overhauled courses offered, and partnership-focused opportunities contributed to more confident graduate students who were more broadly trained and better prepared in their chosen environmental career paths. Based on evaluation surveys, graduate students reported significant gains in scientific, technical, and career knowledge as well as transferrable skills in communication, data analysis, leadership, mentoring, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The structure and evolution of the Ridge 2 Reef traineeship can provide a framework for other graduate education programs to better incorporate interdisciplinary training and student feedback, ultimately improving programs and preparing scientists for the 21st century workforce.

Dispersal shapes microbial communities, yet it is largely unknown how fast or how far free-living microorganisms move in the environment. Here, we deployed microbial traps along transects spanning a grassland and neighboring shrubland to quantify the rate and distance at which microorganisms disperse into the soil surface. We found that bacteria disperse at a similar rate across the two ecosystems, and both bacteria and fungi exhibit a signature of dispersal limitation at a meter scale, indicating highly heterogeneous dispersal of microorganisms into soil.

The coral reef at Kahekili Beach Park (KBP) in West Maui receives eutrophic submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), of which over half is injected wastewater from the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility (LWRF). Algal blooms, decreased calcification, calcium carbonate dissolution and bioerosion have been identified as consequences of injected wastewater. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Maui visitor numbers dropped 99 %, which reduced effluent volume and total nitrogen (TN) loading of injected wastewater by 70 % and 60 %, respectively.

With their simplified and isolated communities, oceanic islands are considered 'natural laboratories' for biogeographic and evolutionary studies. Along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), St Paul's Rocks, Ascension and St Helena islands are nearly equidistant from South America and Africa. While St Paul's Rocks is typically associated with the Brazilian Province, Ascension and St Helena are commonly treated as a unified biogeographical entity despite being separated by approximately 1300 km of open ocean.

Photothermal therapy for bacterial infections poses a significant challenge due to the high temperatures required for effective bacterial eradication, which can also harm surrounding healthy tissues. Determining the minimal effective temperature for bacterial destruction is therefore critical. In this study, artificial reef-like manganese-doped Prussian blue (PBMn) nanoframes are developed as photothermal agents and physical cross-linkers to reinforce a phytic acid and cationic polymer network coating.
