Article Abstract

The human fetal immune system starts to develop in the first trimester and likely plays a crucial role in fetal development and maternal-fetal tolerance. Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) are the earliest lymphoid cells to arise in the human fetus. ILCs consist of natural killer (NK) cells, ILC1s, ILC2s, and ILC3s that all share a common lymphoid origin. Here, we studied fetal ILC subsets, mainly NK cells and ILC3s and their potential progenitors, across human fetal tissues. Our results show that fetal ILC subsets have distinct distribution, developmental kinetics, and gene expression profiles across human fetal tissues. Furthermore, we identify CD34RORγtEomes and CD34RORγtEomes cells in the fetal intestine, indicating that tissue-specific ILC progenitors exist already during fetal development.

Genomic characterization of normal and aberrant human milk production.

Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences, University of California, San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, USA.

Breastfeeding is essential for reducing infant morbidity and mortality, yet exclusive breastfeeding rates remain low, often because of insufficient milk production. The molecular causes of low milk production are not well understood. Fresh milk samples from 30 lactating individuals, classified by milk production levels across postpartum stages, were analyzed using genomic and microbiome techniques.

The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a major global health problem, with increased risk among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. We propose SIDS, or a subset, is due to a defect in the brainstem serotonin system mediating cardiorespiratory integration and arousal. This defect impinges on homeostasis during a critical developmental period in infancy, especially in populations experiencing maternal and infantile stress, resulting in sleep-related sudden death.

Displacement, personal loss, and psychological strain among physicians and nurses working in Gaza, 2023-2024.

On January 26th 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) recognized plausible grounds for genocide being committed in Gaza by Israel. A hallmark of the violence has been unprecedented attacks on health workers since October 7th, 2023. We use the word "genocide" to refer to this period of accelerated violence and displacement in Gaza, following ICJ findings, detailed reports by human rights organizations, and statements by genocide scholars concluding that Israel is indeed committing genocide.
