At the glutamatergic synapses between rod photoreceptors and ON-type bipolar cells, neurotransmitter is detected by the postsynaptic metabotropic glutamate receptor mGluR6. This receptor forms trans-synaptic interactions with ELFN1, a presynaptic cell adhesion molecule expressed in rods, and ELFN1 is important for mGluR6 localization at bipolar cell dendritic tips. Here, we show that in mice of either sex lacking mGluR6, the presynaptic localization of ELFN1 is disrupted.

Masticatory dysfunction is a risk factor for Alzheimer 's disease (AD), likely due to the trigeminal influences on the Locus Coeruleus (LC), a structure implicated in neurodegenerative processes and whose activity level is reflected by pupil size. Chewing activity acutely stimulates cognitive performance by increasing LC activation during task, as reflected by an increased pupil dilatation (mydriasis). The presence of a trigeminal sensorimotor imbalance is associated to an asymmetry in LC activity (reflected by an asymmetry in pupil size) and is detrimental for performance.

Background: Correcting bulbous nasal tips in Asian tip plasty is challenging because of the firm and thick skin soft-tissue envelope (SSTE), and some patients may not achieve the desired results despite reshaping cartilage and bone structures.
Objectives: The authors of this study evaluate the effectiveness of nasal skin and soft-tissue excision in patients with persistent bulbous tips after unsatisfactory scaffold-based rhinoplasty.
Methods: From November 2019 to November 2021, the patients with bulbous nasal tips caused by firm and thick SSTE underwent nasal skin and soft-tissue excision after inadequate results from bone and cartilage scaffold reshaping.

Background: Seymour fractures are a unique type of pediatric distal phalangeal fracture that can be easily misdiagnosed as a simple nail-bed injury or mallet finger. Because of this potential for misdiagnosis, clear communication with consulting physicians regarding physical examination findings, such as nail plate avulsion and radiographic findings, is necessary. Seymour fractures involve the open physis and the germinal matrix, which become interposed in the fracture site, increasing the likelihood of infection.

Background: Scaphoid fractures are a common, yet challenging, injury to treat. The mini-open dorsal approach to the scaphoid is a simple, yet effective, approach that allows for improved visualization and more accurate screw placement in the setting of scaphoid fracture fixation.
Description: An approximately 2-cm longitudinal incision is made centered over the dorsal radiocarpal joint, just ulnar to the Lister tubercle.
