Cervical spinal cord injuries (cSCI) are associated with decreased breathing ability. Although no treatment options are currently available, moderate acute intermittent hypoxia (mAIH) is a promising therapeutic modality to improve breathing function after cSCI. Moderate AIH elicits phrenic motor plasticity via distinct, competing serotonin- or adenosine-driven mechanisms that interact via powerful crosstalk inhibition that constrains or even abolishes plasticity.

Acute exposure to intermittent hypoxia (AIH) produces prolonged increases (long-term facilitation, LTF) in phrenic (PhrNA) and sympathetic (SNA) nerve activity (pLTF and sLTF, respectively) during non-hypoxic periods, and augments cardiorespiratory responses to hypoxia. We recently showed that neuronal activity in the nucleus tractus solitarii (nTS) is required for the induction and maintenance of LTF. However, the specific mechanisms involved were not determined.

Central sleep apnea (CSA) is a heterogeneous group of sleep-related breathing disorders characterized by intermittent absence of respiratory effort during sleep. CSA results from impaired neurological signaling from the respiratory centers to the respiratory muscles, leading to airflow cessation for at least 10 s. Major causes include heart failure, opioid use, central neurological disorders, and altitude exposure.

Acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) elicits a form of respiratory motor plasticity known as phrenic long-term facilitation (pLTF). Exposure to repetitive daily AIH (dAIH) enhances pLTF, a form of metaplasticity. Little is known concerning cellular mechanisms giving rise to dAIH-induced metaplasticity and the age-dependent sexual dimorphism of AIH associated pro-plasticity mRNA expression.

Background: Eosinophilic esophagitis is a condition characterized clinically by symptoms related to esophageal dysfunction and histologically by a marked eosinophilic infiltrate in the esophageal mucosa. The most typical symptoms of eosinophilic esophagitis include intermittent dysphagia with episodic food impaction and heartburn with propensity for young individuals. The relationship between hiccups and eosinophilic esophagitis is unclear but has been described.
