Article Abstract

Objectives: The Social Detachment Questionnaire for the Older Population (SDQO) is a validated tool that assesses various dimensions of social relationships. This study aimed to profile social detachment among older people in Taiwan using the SDQO and explore its use in distinguishing groups with varying levels of social engagement.

Methods: A telephone-based survey was conducted, collecting demographic data and responses to the SDQO and Brief Symptom Rating Scale-5 (BSRS-5). Cluster analysis based on SDQO dimension scores was performed to identify groupings. Regression analyses examined the association between social engagement clusters, demographic variables, and BSRS-5 scores. A receiver operating characteristic curve was established and the area under the curve was calculated to identify the cutoff for distinguishing individuals with high and low social engagement.

Results: In a representative sample of 2549 individuals aged 55 and above in Taiwan, cluster analysis identified two groups based on social engagement levels as measured by the SDQO. The low social engagement cluster, indicating higher social detachment, was more likely to consist of older individuals (≥ 75 years), those without children, and those with lower education levels (≤ 9 years). After adjusting for demographics, the low social engagement cluster was associated with higher BSRS-5 scores. The optimal SDQO cutoff for identifying low social engagement was 27/28.

Conclusions: The SDQO can identify socially detached older people, who are more likely to experience increased psychological distress. Screening older individuals with demographic risk factors using the SDQO could help identify those most vulnerable to adverse health outcomes related to social detachment.

This study aims to examine the relationship between outdoor environmental quality, trust in neighbors, and social integration among residents of public rental housing in Seoul, South Korea. It also investigates how neighborly relationships moderate this association. The study uses data from the 2016-2021 Seoul Public Rental Housing Panel Survey (SPRHPS) and applies individual fixed effects models to examine how outdoor environmental quality affects trust in neighbors.

A systematic scoping review was conducted to examine how rest is operationalized and measured in daily life among adults with and without long-term conditions. Searches were performed in PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Psych databases for studies from 1990 to 2024. Two independent reviewers screened and selected eligible studies, which included adults with and without long-term conditions.

The genitalia of Lepidoptera are complex structures that evolve rapidly and divergently. The endophallus of many lepidopterans is ornamented with elaborate sclerotized structures known as cornuti. In some species, the cornuti are deciduous and remain within the female genital tract after copulation; the function of these structures is virtually unknown.

This narrative review explores the evolving symbolism of long, thick eyelashes from classic antiquity to the present, positioning them as cultural markers of virtue, beauty, and identity. Sparked by the author's observation of the finely sculpted eyelashes of the Charioteer of Delphi (circa 470 BCE), this study traces how eyelashes transitioned from signs of divine chastity to tools of performative beauty. In ancient Greece, eyelashes embodied sōphrosynē-moral restraint and inner harmony-rather than sensuality.

Background: The nurse-patient relationship is considered important in nursing theories and ethics. Yet, on general hospital wards, such relationships are often not achieved. Prior to addressing developing satisfactory nurse-patient relationships, it is essential to first understand the types of relationships that occur and the dynamics that shape them.
