Arboviruses represent a significant threat to the health of humans, animals, and plants worldwide. Mechanistic modeling has proven useful for elucidating the transmission, anticipating the spread, and predicting the response of arboviruses to control measures. However, most models approximate the intra-vector infection dynamic (IVD), which occurs during the extrinsic incubation period (EIP), by a single stage with an average duration.

Unlocking nature's hidden treasures: Actinomycetota's arsenal of potent antiviral compounds against human viral infections.

Microb Pathog

August 2025

Institute of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, 50603, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Centre for Natural Products Research and Drug Discovery, 50603, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Electronic address:

The global emergence of infectious diseases, including COVID-19, Mpox, MERS, Ebola, dengue, Zika, and avian influenza, alongside the escalation of antimicrobial resistance, has made the discovery of novel antiviral agents an urgent priority. Actinomycetota, a diverse group of microorganisms known for their medicinal properties and antibiotic production, stand out as a promising source of antiviral compounds. Since the 20th century, studies on the antiviral potential of Actinomycetota-derived secondary metabolites have shown efficacy against various human viruses, such as influenza viruses (IVs), human coronaviruses (hCoVs), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), mosquito-borne viruses such as Zika virusZIKV), dengue virus (DENV), West Nile virus (WNV), Chikungunya virus (CHIKV)), and monkeypox virus (MPXV).

Streptococcus sanguinis is a commensal oral flora and an opportunistic pathogen prevalently implicated in native valve infective endocarditis (IE). However, in developing nations, infective endocarditis is currently affecting young healthy adults. In this case report, we presented a case of a 26-year-old male with Streptococcus sanguinis endocarditis without obvious aetiology, which was initially diagnosed and treated for dengue fever.

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), an arbovirus-borne infection, is endemic in multiple regions across the globe. It has been observed that patients with severe viral respiratory tract infections are highly susceptible to developing a fungal co-infection. We present a similar case of a 27-year-old female diagnosed with DHF, reporting the development of aspergillosis during recovery from dengue fever.

Background: Mosquito-borne diseases, such as malaria, dengue, and Zika, continue to pose significant threats to global health, resulting in millions of cases and thousands of deaths each year. Notably, only older mosquitoes can transmit these diseases. Therefore, accurate age estimation of mosquitoes is vital for targeted interventions and risk assessments.
