Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (or "SLIPS") can prevent bacterial surface fouling, but they do not inherently possess the means to kill bacteria or reduce cell loads in surrounding media. Past reports show that the infused liquids in these materials can be leveraged to load and release antimicrobial agents, but these approaches are generally limited to the use of hydrophobic agents that are soluble in the infused oily phases. Here, we report the design of so-called "proto-SLIPS" that address this limitation and permit the release of highly water-soluble (or oil-insoluble) agents.

We describe the rationale, methodology, and design of the Boston University Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (BU ADRC) Clinical Core (CC). The CC characterizes a longitudinal cohort of participants with/without brain trauma to characterize the clinical presentation, biomarker profiles, and risk factors of post-traumatic Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD), including chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Participants complete assessments of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and repetitive head impacts (RHIs); annual Uniform Data Set (UDS) and supplementary evaluations; digital phenotyping; annual blood draw; magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and lumbar puncture every 3 years; electroencephalogram (EEG); and amyloid and/or tau positron emission tomography (PET) on a subset.

Traditionally, environmental research and practice treated human beings and ecosystems as two separate entities, focusing on the negative impacts humans cause to ecosystems. Social-ecological systems framing helps to address this long-standing dichotomy. Yet, the integration of social dimensions into social-ecological systems remains poorly defined and contested, requiring more theory development and practice.

Mega-events such as the Olympic Games, World Cup, and World Expo aim to leave sustainability legacies, yet the mechanisms through which these goals are realized in hotel operations remain underexplored. This study adopts a multiple case study design, analyzing secondary data including sustainability reports, certification documents, and post-event assessments from five host cities-London, Tokyo, Dubai, Rio de Janeiro, and Doha. The findings reveal that mega-events can serve as catalysts for sustainability upgrades in hotels, including energy-efficient technologies, employee training, and guest-oriented green initiatives.
