The factors that trigger lapses of attention (e.g., mind-wandering) during new learning remain unclear. The present study investigated whether the likelihood of experiencing an attentional lapse depends on (a) the importance of the material being studied and (b) the learner's age. In two experiments, younger and older adults completed a delayed free recall task in which to-be-remembered words were paired with point values. Thought probes were embedded into the encoding phase of each list to provide an index of one's ability to maintain attention on task and prevent recurrent lapses of attention (i.e., the consistency of attention). Experiment 1 revealed all individuals better remembered high-value information at the expense of low-value information, and older adults were more frequently focused on the task than younger adults. Participants were also less likely to remember an item at test if they experienced an attentional lapse while learning said item, and they were more consistently focused on the task when studying high-value information than when studying low-value information. Age did not moderate either of these effects. Experiment 2 replicated the findings from Experiment 1 and further revealed that the positive association between age and attentional consistency was explained by age-related differences in affect, motivation, personality, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder symptomology. Once these factors were accounted for, older age was associated with increased attentional (less on-task focus). While future replication of this finding is needed, implications for education and theories of both mind-wandering and aging are discussed. Purpose: Mind wandering, the shift of attention from a primary task to unrelated thoughts, is a pervasive cognitive phenomenon with significant implications for cognition, emotion, and behavior. Despite its prevalence, accurately measuring mind wandering and its subtypes remains a challenge due to its subjective and dynamic nature.
Method: This systematic review evaluated the strengths and limitations of methods for measuring mind wandering subtypes, synthesizing findings from 555 studies.

Many cognitive and sensory processes are characterized by strong relationships between the timing of neuronal spiking and the phase of ongoing local field potential oscillations. The coupling of neuronal spiking in neocortex to the phase of alpha oscillations (8-12 Hz) has been well studied in nonhuman primates but remains largely unexplored in other mammals. How this alpha modulation of spiking differs between brain areas and cell types, as well as its role in sensory processing and decision making, are not well understood.

Objective: Learning unfolds in distinct stages-acquisition, consolidation, and maintenance-shaped by cognitive mechanisms such as saliency processing, interference control, and sustained attention. ADHD in adults is associated with deficits in these cognitive processes, which in turn might lead to learning difficulties.
Method: Using a novel protocol that incorporates a visual attention task with gestalt-image targets and primer distractors, we investigated these cognitive mechanisms across different stages of learning in 53 adults diagnosed with ADHD and 18 neurotypical Controls.

Backgrounds/aims: Surgical data science (SDS) is an emerging discipline that aims to enhance the quality of interventional healthcare by capturing and analyzing intraoperative data. Our study focused on identifying human errors (HEs) and adverse events (AEs) during elective liver surgery using an SDS-based approach.
Methods: Intraoperative data from 15 patients undergoing elective open liver resection were collected using an operating room data system (audio, room, and operative field videos) over a 6-month period in a tertiary hepatobiliary surgical center.
