Article Abstract

Gesture recognition has become a significant part of human-machine interaction, particularly when verbal interaction is not feasible. The rapid development of biomedical sensing and machine learning algorithms, including electromyography (EMG) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs), has enabled the interpretation of sign languages, including the Polish Sign Language, based on EMG signals. The objective was to classify the game control gestures and Polish Sign Language gestures recorded specifically for this study using two different data acquisition systems: BIOPAC MP36 and MyoWare 2.0. We compared the classification performance of various machine learning algorithms, with a particular emphasis on CNNs on the dataset of EMG signals representing 24 gestures, recorded using both types of EMG sensors. The results (98.324% versus ≤7.8571% and 95.5307% versus ≤10.2697% of accuracy for CNNs and other classifiers in data recorded with BIOPAC MP36 and MyoWare, respectively) indicate that CNNs demonstrate superior accuracy. These results suggest the feasibility of using lower-cost sensors for effective gesture classification and the viability of integrating affordable EMG-based technologies into broader gesture recognition frameworks, providing a cost-effective solution for real-world applications. The dataset created during the study offers a basis for future studies on EMG-based recognition of Polish Sign Language.

Lateral microsegregation in a monolayer of a binary mixture of particles or macromolecules is studied by molecular dynamics simulations in a generic model with the interacting potentials inspired by effective interactions in biological or soft-matter systems. In the model, the energy is minimized when like particles form small clusters, and the cross-interaction is of opposite sign. We show that the laterally microsegregated components in the dense ordered phases form alternating stripes for similar densities, or the clusters of the minority component fill the hexagonally distributed voids formed in the dense phase of the majority component.

Background: Demographic changes associated with an ageing population, combined with the shortage of nursing personnel in Poland, have led to the introduction of a distinct new medical profession-the medical caregiver-which is separate from the nursing profession and has been officially included in the national classification of professions and specialties. The case describes a 10-year-old female patient admitted to the Developmental Neurology Clinic due to gait disturbances and lower limb muscle weakness of sudden onset. Neurological examination revealed features of pyramidal syndrome, including hyperreflexia in the lower limbs, spastic paraparesis, and a left-sided Babinski sign. Magnetic resonance imaging findings indicated a pathological fracture of the thoracic 6 vertebral body and a solid pathological lesion at the T5, T6, T7 level.

Background: Alport syndrome (AS) is a rare inherited kidney disease associated with progressive renal failure and visual and hearing disorders. The purpose of this study was to find genetic variants in patients with suspected Alport syndrome from Central and Southwestern Poland and their association with the clinical course of the disease, and to evaluate the impact of Alport syndrome on pregnancy.
