Article Abstract

Insertion storage in battery electrodes and supercapacitive storage are typically considered to be independent phenomena and thus are dealt with in separate scientific communities. Using tailored experiments on titanium oxide thin films of various thicknesses, we demonstrate the simultaneous occurrence of both processes. For the interpretation of the entire storage profile encompassing both contributions, the (free) energies of the charge carriers in the mixed conductor and the neighboring phase are the only materials parameters required. The experimental results enable no less than a unification of insertion and supercapacitive storage, the first being dominant for thick films, the latter for thin films or negligible electronic conductivity. Therefore, the size of the storage medium and the nature of the current collecting phases can be used to tune power density versus energy density.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are remarkable electroactive materials for energy storage and electrochemical CO reduction (CORR) due to their high surface area and tunable pore structures. However, challenges such as stability, conductivity, and product selectivity at high current densities must be addressed to realize their full potential. We crossbreed a zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)-based MOF with MXene using a simple layer-by-layer deposition technique and investigate the supercapacitive and CORR performances.

In our study, supercapacitor electrodes were prepared by depositing electroless Ni-B coating on copper plates, followed by nitric acid etching. The composition and the micro- and phase structure of the coatings were investigated by ICP-OES, PFIB-SEM, and XRD techniques. The original pebble-like structure of the coating consists of 0.

In this study, the electrochemical energy storage capability of hydrothermally synthesized samarium chromite (SmCrO) nanoparticles was thoroughly investigated, highlighting their potential application as electrode material in supercapacitor. Comprehensive structural, optical, morphological, and functional analyses were conducted using x-ray diffraction, UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Photoluminescence spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy to confirm the successful formation of SmCrOnanoparticles. The electrochemical performance was evaluated in a three-electrode configuration employing 1 M KOH as the aqueous electrolyte, where cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were carried out.

The rapid advancement of electrochemical energy storage based on earth-abundant sodium (Na) ions necessitates the seamless integration of high energy density and fast charge-discharge kinetics. A persistent challenge in this domain is the sluggish ion migration kinetics associated with the large ionic radii of Na ions, which significantly impact high-energy output applications, such as acceleration and climbing. Herein, a concept of Capacitance-Enhanced Battery (CEB) is proposed that leverages an ultra-large MXene framework interfaced with a BiS@ZnS composite(hereafter abbreviated as BiZnS) to form a C@BiZnS@VC heterostructure for reaching a dynamic dual-mechanism response.

Carbon/transition metal oxide composites hold significant promise for energy storage applications; however, achieving precise control over the carbon structure to enhance the electrochemical activity of metal oxides remains a challenge. In this work, we utilized low-cost enzymatic lignin as a carbon source and harnessed the synergistic effects of magnesium oxide templates and potassium acetate activator to synthesize a lignin-derived hierarchical porous carbon (HPLC) characterized by a high specific surface area of 1704 ± 36 m/g, well-ordered nanosheet structures, and hierarchical porosity. The comparative analysis demonstrated that HPLC exhibited superior pore anchoring and enhanced interfacial Mn-O-C bonding interactions with manganese dioxide compared to mesoporous carbon synthesized via magnesium oxide templating and microporous carbon derived from potassium acetate activation.
