Article Abstract

Biology can be viewed from both an organismal and a genic perspective. A good example is W.D. Hamilton's work on inclusive fitness and kin selection, which puts relatedness at the heart of our understanding of social behavior. Relatedness mediates how much an actor should value a specific behavior's effect on a relative compared to the cost incurred to itself. Despite its key explanatory role, relatedness is also a concept marred with misunderstanding. Part of the problem has been that the term has been used in different ways by different people. To help address this, we survey the history of how relatedness has been formally modeled, paying particular attention to how it is conceptualized from both a gene-centric and an organism-centric point of view.

The likelihood ratio (LR) is a recommended metric for assessing the strength of genetic information in relationship testing, one of the most important tasks in forensic science. LR calculation incorporate population frequencies, which is affected by population substructure. This study utilized population frequency data from 18 short tandem repeat (STR) loci across 13 Chinese populations, encompassing both majority and minority ethnic groups.

Background: Vancomycin-resistant enterococcal (VRE) infections pose significant challenges in healthcare. Transmission dynamics of VRE are complex, often involving patient colonization and subsequent transmission through various healthcare-associated vectors. We utilized a whole genome sequencing (WGS) surveillance program at our institution to better understand the contribution of clinical and colonizing isolates to VRE transmission.

Introduction: Polygenic risk scores (PRS) have been used to assess an individual's risk for various diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study applied the PRS approach to a cohort of families ascertained for healthy aging, that have shown a reduced risk of AD. Using the SNPs identified as significantly associated with AD in the study by Kunkle and colleagues, we examined the utility of PRS for predicting AD risk in a cohort ascertained for familial healthy aging.

Motivation: Metabolic modeling has emerged as a powerful tool for predicting community functions. However, current modeling approaches face significant challenges in balancing the metabolic trade-offs between individual and community-level growth. In this study, we investigated the effect of metabolic relatedness among taxa on growth rate calculations by merging related taxa based on their metabolic similarity, introducing this approach as PhyloCOBRA.

Increased parental relatedness occurs in small wild populations and in closed colonies in captivity and reduces offspring fitness. A closed colony of is maintained as genetically diverse stock at the Peromyscus Genetic Stock Center since 1963. Breeding records are available for all the years of breeding in captivity, which allows evaluation of the breeding performance since the inception of the stock.
