A time-dependent mechanism mediated by SPL9 highlights how age-related growth reprogramming influences leaf shape modifications in simple- and complex-leaved, related plants. Extending cell proliferation and delaying differentiation drives the mechanism, offering insights into the shared developmental processes underlying leaf form diversification.
