Urbanization tends to increase local lightning frequency (i.e. the 'lightning enhancement' effect). Despite many urban areas showing lightning enhancement, the prevalence of these effects is unknown and the drivers underlying these patterns are poorly quantified. We conducted a global assessment of cloud-to-ground lightning flashes (lightning strikes) across 349 cities to evaluate how the likelihood and magnitude of lightning enhancement vary with geography, climate, air pollution, topography and urban development. The likelihood of exhibiting lightning enhancement increased with higher temperature and precipitation in urban areas relative to their natural surroundings (i.e. urban heat islands and elevated urban precipitation), higher regional lightning strike frequency, greater distance to water bodies and lower elevations. Lightning enhancement was stronger in cities with conspicuous heat islands and elevated urban precipitation effects, higher lightning strike frequency, larger urban areas and lower latitudes. The particularly strong effects of elevated urban temperature and precipitation indicate that these are dominant mechanisms by which cities cause local lightning enhancement.

Adoptive T-cell therapies, and particularly CAR T cells and tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes, have transformed cancer treatment by selectively targeting malignant cells. Despite their clinical success, these therapies face substantial challenges, including costly manufacturing processes and tumour-imposed barriers that limit efficacy. Advances in understanding the nanoscale mechanisms governing T-cell activation and the role of the tumour microenvironment in restricting T-cell responses have driven the development of nanotechnology-based strategies that integrate key chemical and physical cues.

Introduction: OpenStreetMap (OSM) road surface data is critical for navigation, infrastructure monitoring, and urban planning but is often incomplete or inconsistent. This study addresses the need for automated validation and classification of road surfaces by leveraging high-resolution aerial imagery and deep learning techniques.
Methods: We propose a MaskCNN-based deep learning model enhanced with attention mechanisms and a hierarchical loss function to classify road surfaces into four types: asphalt, concrete, gravel, and dirt.

Most numerical studies on carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) lightning damages fail to account for delamination, a factor that plays a significant role in the subsequent analysis of residual strength. This study establishes an electro-thermo-mechanical coupled numerical model incorporating delamination effects to predict lightning-induced damage in carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites. Subsequently, parametric investigations evaluate the influence of varying input loads and stacking sequences on interlaminar pyrolysis and delamination damage, with damage assessment quantitatively conducted based on simulated post-strike uniaxial ultimate compressive loads.
