Aim: The Noto Peninsula earthquake occurred on January 1, 2024, and many disaster-related deaths were reported. We investigated the characteristics and causes of disaster-related deaths in the year following the Noto Peninsula earthquake.
Methods: We used 270 texts as data on disaster-related deaths in Ishikawa Prefecture released by local governments from January to December 2024.

Objective: To examine the challenges and practical realities of providing end-of-life care in welfare evacuation centers following the Noto Peninsula earthquake in Japan, and to identify lessons for improving disaster preparedness in similar settings.
Case Presentations: Case 1: A man in his late 90s was transferred to a welfare evacuation center after contracting COVID-19 in a general shelter. He arrived with fever and marked physical decline.

As disasters increase in both frequency and complexity, their indirect effects - such as disruptions to medical care, environmental changes, prolonged periods of evacuation, and psychosocial stress - are increasingly recognised as critical public health issues. In Japan, disaster-related deaths (DRDs) represent an institutional framework to address these secondary health impacts. We compare two DRD certification systems: the Nagaoka Criteria and the Minamisoma Criteria.

In the past two decades, disasters have directly affected the lives of nearly 1.23 million people. Asia is the most affected region in the world by all types of disasters, such as war and natural disasters, accounting for 44% of all disasters, 58% of total deaths, and 70% of all victims.
