Introduction: Climate variability and non-environmental factors such as travel and migration pose an increasing risk of vector-borne infectious diseases to extratropical regions. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has reported autochthonous transmissions of dengue or West Nile virus in Italy, France, Spain, and Germany. Raising awareness and implementing protective measures against mosquitoes will therefore become increasingly relevant in Germany in the future.

Arboviral diseases represent a growing global health challenge. While dengue cases surge in endemic regions, non-endemic areas in southern Europe are seeing a rise in imported cases of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya, along with the first autochthonous dengue transmissions. The expanding Aedes mosquito populations, influenced by climate change, and increased international travel introducing viremic cases further elevate the risk of outbreaks.

Introduction: Estimating the burden of Zika virus (ZIKV) and dengue virus (DENV) infections in migrants is important to promote their health status and recommend appropriate interventions. We aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of ZIKV and DENV in migrants from high endemic countries attended at a referral center in Rome (Italy), arriving via the Mediterranean from North and sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia.
Methods: Sixty-four serum samples from migrants were tested for anti-ZIKV and anti-DENV immunoglobulin (Ig) G and IgM by ELISA.

Background: In 2023, an unprecedentedly high number of locally acquired cases of dengue virus occurred in Europe, including the first large outbreak in Rome (Italy). Globally, 2023 was warmer than any previous year on record since 1850, with each month from June to December being warmer than the corresponding month in previous years.
Methods: We conducted an extensive analysis of entomological data in Rome to investigate how the unprecedentedly high temperatures seen in 2023 affected the abundance and seasonal dynamics of the local vector Aedes albopictus population and the risk of autochthonous transmission of both dengue and chikungunya viruses.
