Organisms use constitutive or induced defenses against pathogens and other external threats. Constitutive defenses are constantly on, whereas induced defenses are activated when needed. Each of these strategies has costs and benefits, which can affect the type of defense that evolves in response to pathogens. In addition, induced defenses are usually regulated by multiple negative feedback mechanisms that prevent overactivation of the immune response. However, it is unclear how negative feedback affects the costs, benefits, and evolution of induced responses. To address this gap, we developed a mechanistic model of the well-characterized Drosophila melanogaster immune signaling network that includes 3 separate mechanisms of negative feedback as a representative of the widespread phenomenon of multilevel regulation of induced responses. We show that, under stochastic fly-bacteria encounters, an induced defense is favored when bacterial encounters are rare or uncertain, but in ways that depend on the bacterial proliferation rate. Our model also predicts that the specific negative regulators that optimize the induced response depend on the bacterial proliferation rate, linking negative feedback mechanisms to the factors that favor induction.

Purpose: Residual speech sound disorder (RSSD) is a high-prevalence condition that can limit children's academic and social participation, with negative consequences for overall well-being. Previous studies have described visual biofeedback as a promising option for RSSD, but results have been inconclusive due to study design limitations and small sample sizes.
Method: In a preregistered randomized controlled trial, 108 children aged 9-15 years with RSSD affecting American English /ɹ/ were randomly assigned to receive treatment incorporating visual biofeedback (subdivided into ultrasound and visual-acoustic types) or a comparison condition of motor-based treatment consistent with current best practices in speech therapy.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been associated with altered performance monitoring, reflected in enhanced amplitudes of the error-related negativity in the event-related potential. However, this is not specific to OCD, as overactive error processing is also evident in anxiety. Developing a practical strategy to enhance the quality of medicinal herb while alleviating negative plant-soil feedback (NPSF) is critical for agriculture. In this study, we investigated the effects of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) on Panax notoginseng through a two-year field experiment. Four treatments were established: a control (SeNPs_0) and three SeNPs concentrations (3, 5, and 10 mg/L), which were foliar-sprayed every 15 days for a total of six applications.
