Background: Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR) improves real-time control of EMG-based prostheses by connecting severed nerves to adjacent muscles, creating new EMG signals. However, TMR requires cutting original nerve connections, which can cause denervation atrophy and limit functional recovery. As an alternative, Targeted Nerve Function Replacement (TNFR) offers a fundamentally different approach by establishing a direct end-to-end anastomosis between an intact donor nerve and the original nerve of a target muscle, preserving existing neural pathways while providing supplementary neural input.

Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a global health issue, posing a substantial burden on the individual, community, and public health. The risk of developing NCDs is influenced by a complex interplay between genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors.

Methods: The NorthPop Birth Cohort Study (NorthPop) constitutes an infrastructure enabling cutting-edge research on the foundational pathways to NCDs in childhood, including allergic diseases and asthma, overweight/obesity, cognitive and neurodevelopmental dysfunction, gastrointestinal disorders, and caries.

Nanomedicine-mediated macrophage polarization enhances the iron-depleting effect of desferrioxamine for breast cancer immunotherapy.

J Control Release

August 2025

Key Laboratory of Spine and Spinal Cord Injury Repair and Regeneration, Ministry of Education, Tongji Hospital, Department of Pharmacy, School of Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai, China. Electronic address:

Therapeutic strategies targeting iron metabolism to disturb the physiological functions of tumor cells have emerged as promising avenues in cancer treatment. Deferoxamine (DFOM) is an effective FDA-approved iron chelator that actively eliminates iron from cells, inducing iron-related dysfunction. However, its use is considerably limited by off-target toxicities and the innate metabolic compensatory capacity of tumor cells.

Rewiring the Spine-Cutting-Edge Stem Cell Therapies for Spinal Cord Repair.

Int J Mol Sci

May 2025

Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah 21589, Saudi Arabia.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a debilitating neurological condition that leads to severe disabilities, significantly reducing patients' quality of life and imposing substantial societal and economic burdens. SCI involves a complex pathogenesis, including primary irreversible damage and secondary injury driven by neuroinflammation, apoptosis, and ischemia. Current treatments often provide limited efficacy, underscoring the urgent need for innovative therapeutic strategies.

Upper Airway Control Therapy (U-ACT): The Development of a Non-Pharmacological Intervention for Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction.

Respirology

June 2025

Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, School of Biological Sciences, Division of Infection, Immunity & Respiratory Medicine, The University of Manchester, Manchester, UK.

Background And Objective: Non-pharmacological intervention is the recommended gold standard for inducible laryngeal obstruction (ILO) treatment. Despite this, there is no standardised approach and interventions are poorly described. The objective was to develop and describe a standardised non-pharmacological intervention for ILO, for future testing of effectiveness.
