Article Abstract

We developed a Mach-Zehnder type electron interferometer (MZ-EI) that enables simultaneous observation of interferograms created at multiple output locations on a 1.2-MV field-emission transmission electron microscope. This MZ-EI is composed of two single-crystal thin films, a lens located between the single-crystal thin films and imaging lenses. By comparing interferograms created by electron waves travelling through different beam paths, we found that the relative phase difference was caused by phase modulation passing through the single crystals and by aberrations and defocus values of the lenses. We also confirmed that the relative phase difference can be controlled using the tilted illumination method.

Infrared (IR) spectroscopic imaging combines the molecular specificity of vibrational spectroscopy with imaging capabilities of microscopy, potentially allowing for simultaneous quantitative observations of drugs and cellular response. Kounis syndrome, also known as allergic myocardial infarction, is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition in which acute coronary events are triggered by an allergic reaction. The pathophysiology involves mast cell degranulation and the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine, leukotrienes, and platelet-activating factor, leading to coronary vasospasm, myocardial ischemia, or infarction. We present the case of a female patient in her 80s with no prior history of coronary artery disease who developed anaphylaxis shortly after intravenous administration of co-amoxiclav in the emergency department.

Rationale: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a DNA virus from the herpesvirus family that is widespread among humans. Very low birth weight infants (VLBWI) are particularly susceptible to postnatal CMV infection due to their compromised immune systems. The clinical manifestations of postnatal CMV infection are often nonspecific, which complicates early detection and may lead to multi-organ dysfunction and long-term sequelae.
