Optimum Push-off for Uneven Walking Based on the Just-in-Time Strategy: Walking with Interrupted Push-Off is Mechanically Costly.

J Biomech Eng

September 2025

Department of Biomedical Engineering, Schulich School of engineering, University of Calgary, AB, Canada; Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, AB, Canada.

Using a powered simple walking model (point mass with rigid massless legs), the optimal analytical push-off was derived based on walking speed and step elevation changes. It was observed that higher speeds increased the available push-off to attain greater step-up e.g.

Background/objectives: Accurate prediction of pediatric appendicitis diagnosis, management, and severity is critical for clinical decision-making. We aimed to evaluate the predictive performance of a wide range of machine learning models, combined with various feature selection techniques, on a pediatric appendicitis dataset. A particular focus was placed on the role of ultrasound (US) image-descriptive features in model performance and explainability.

Objectives: The clinical pathway for patients with moderate-to-severe Crohn's disease (CD) typically includes sequential pharmacologic treatment as well as surgery, but positioning of different therapies within these sequences remains challenging. Cost-utility analysis rarely captures these sequences and does not incorporate registry data on long-term effectiveness. In this study, we aim to overcome these limitations.

Introduction: Freestanding birth centers (FSBCs) play a critical role in expanding access to midwifery-led care, yet ensuring safe, efficient emergency transfers to hospitals remains a challenge. Effective transfers require strong collaboration between midwives, emergency medical services (EMS), and hospital-based providers. The Step Up Together Action Collaborative was launched in 2024 to strengthen interprofessional education and emergency preparedness.

Cost-Utility of Fluticasone Propionate/Salmeterol and Fluticasone Propionate Monotherapy in Step-Up Treatment of Childhood Asthma.

Pediatr Pulmonol

August 2025

Departamento de Farmacología y Toxicología, Facultad de Medicina, Grupo de Investigación en Farmacología y Toxicología, Universidad de Antioquia, Medellín, Colombia.

Introduction: In children aged 6-11 years who have not responded to daily low-dose inhaled corticosteroids, it is recommended to increase ICS to a medium dose plus as-needed SABA reliever, or to change to combination low-dose ICS-LABA plus as-needed SABA relief. Recently, fluticasone propionate and salmeterol (FSC) have been shown to be more effective than fluticasone propionate alone in preventing exacerbations in patients with eosinophilic asthma. This study aims to evaluate the cost-utility of FSC versus medium doses of FP alone in Colombian patients who do not respond to low-dose inhaled corticosteroids.
