Introduction: Global outbreaks of mosquito-transmitted arbovirus infections, such as dengue (DENV) and chikungunya (CHIKV), are increasing. Differentiating these infections is challenging due to non-specific symptoms and serology limitations. PCR-based approaches offer higher sensitivity and specificity.

Article Synopsis
  • Arboviruses like dengue, chikungunya, and Zika are emerging as significant global health threats, with this study focusing on their prevalence in Kashmir, North India, among patients with acute febrile illness.
  • A total of 812 blood samples were tested, revealing dengue in 12.93% of patients, chikungunya in 2.09%, and no cases of Zika; most affected individuals had traveled within India.
  • The study found that dengue virus-1 was the dominant serotype among positive cases, with common symptoms including fever, fatigue, and joint pain; it emphasizes the need for screening travelers showing symptoms as local populations appear less affected.

Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) have revolutionized reliable detection of dengue virus (DENV) during acute phase of infection. The study evaluated performance of CDC DENV-1-4 real-time assay, trioplex RT-PCR and heminested conventional RT-PCR assay in the diagnosis of DENV. The three NAATs were performed on 107 consecutive samples collected from patients suspected of DENV infection during acute phase of illness.
