Article Abstract

This work presents the experimental assessment of a 20 mL batch reactor's efficacy in converting plastic and oil residues into biofuels. The reactor, designed for ease of use, is heated using a metallic system. The experiments explore plastic solubilization at various temperatures and residence times, employing a mixture of distilled water and ethylene glycol as the solvent. Initial findings reveal that plastic solubilization requires a temperature of 350 °C with an ethylene glycol mole fraction of 0.35, whereas 250 °C suffices with a mole fraction of 0.58. Additionally, the study includes a process simulation of a plant utilizing a double fluidized bed gasifier and an economic evaluation of the interesterification/pyrolysis plant. Simulation results support project feasibility, estimating a total investment cost of approximately $12.99 million and annual operating expenses of around $17.98 million, with a projected payback period of about 5 years.

Biopharmaceutics Classification System Class II and IV drugs face significant challenges owing to poor water solubility, restricting their formulation in liquid delivery forms. The use of polymers, including the loading of drugs into nanoparticles, has attracted attention as an effective strategy for improving the solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs. These polymer carrier systems possess a hydrophilic outer shell and a hydrophobic inner core that can encapsulate poorly water-soluble drugs and improve their dispersibility in aqueous environments.

Mirror-image poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) plastic-degrading enzymes have emerged as promising biocatalytic platforms due to their exceptional enzymatic stability and low immunogenicity. Currently, the sole reported mirror-image plastic-degrading enzyme, the D-form of 231-residue PET hydrolase ICCG (engineered leaf-branch compost cutinase variant), suffers from thermophilic activity requirements, which limits its practical applications. Here, the first total chemical synthesis of a mirror-image 271-residue D-Fast-PETase was presented by using an enzyme-cleavable solubilizing tag strategy.

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) has been expected to be a promising approach to treat lung cancers in a non-invasive manner. Development of boron drugs showing efficient accumulation and long-term retention within the target tumor is key to realizing BNCT for such deep-seated cancers. Here, we report that the complex comprising poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and 4-l-boronophenylalanine (BPA), the only clinically approved drug in BNCT, could show drastic therapeutic efficiency to thoracic tumors mimicking intractable malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) in mice.

Abiotic and biotic stresses increasingly threaten plant health and productivity, causing substantial yield losses in vital crops. In this study, 99 rhizobacteria isolated from Moroccan olive rhizospheres, OM-41 was selected as the most potent strain, exhibiting exceptional drought tolerance (thriving at Aw 0.859), thermotolerance (up to 55 °C), and halotolerance (15% NaCl), alongside plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits such as phosphate solubilization, indole-acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid, siderophore production, and hydrolytic enzyme secretion.
