Article Abstract

The prevailing view about molecular catalysts is that the central metal ion is responsible for the reaction mechanism and selectivity, whereas the ligands mainly affect the reaction kinetics. Here, we question this paradigm and show that ligands have a dramatic influence on the selectivity of the product. We show how even a seemingly small change in ligand isomerization sharply alters the selectivity of the well-researched oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) Co phthalocyanine catalyst from an indirect 2e to a direct 4e pathway. Detailed analysis reveals that intramolecular hydrogen-bond interactions in the ligand activate the catalytic Co, directing the oxygen binding and thus deciding the final product. The resulting catalyst is the first example of a Co-based molecular catalyst catalyzing a direct 4e ORR via ligand isomerization, for which it shows an activity close to the benchmark Pt in an actual H-O fuel cell. The effect of the ligand isomerism is demonstrated with different central metal ions, thus highlighting the generalizability of the findings and their potential to open new possibilities in the design of molecular catalysts.

Development of Carborane-Based Benzothiazole Analogues as Cannabinoid Receptor Type 2 (CBR) Ligands.

ACS Omega

The cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CBR) is upregulated in the brain under pathological conditions. To distinguish between the healthy and disease states, Positron Emission Tomography (PET), as a noninvasive imaging technique, is employed, for which suitable highly affine and selective CBR radioligands are required. The benzothiazole scaffold is a promising core structure that has been modified with different substituents.

Despite the pharmacological relevance of the histamine H receptor (HR), the second most therapeutically targeted G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), an effective photoswitchable ligand to optically control this receptor remains elusive. In this work, we aimed to identify a suitable photoswitchable HR ligand by performing an 'azoscan' on the HR antagonist desloratadine. Taking advantage of the synthetic toolbox available for the desloratadine scaffold, aniline groups were regioselectively installed on the aromatic positions of this scaffold to enable the synthesis of azobenzene analogs targeting the orthosteric binding pocket of HR.

A Versatile One-pot Strategy for Thiazolylazo Extensions: Visible Light-Driven Photoswitches.

J Am Chem Soc

Research Institute for Electronic Science, Hokkaido University, Sapporo 001-0020, Japan.

Among various azoheteroarenes, thiazolylazo derivatives have recently emerged as bidirectional visible-light switches. However, their widespread application as molecular photoswitches remains limited due to synthetic challenges like robust reaction conditions, lack of commercial availability of starting material, and low reaction yield. This work presents a straightforward one-pot methodology for synthesizing thiazolylazo derivatives by reacting 2-trimethylsilylthiazole with various diazonium salts.

A kinetic resolution of racemic biaryl monotriflates by an atroposelective palladium-catalyzed diazenylation enables the synthesis of azobenzene derivatives decorated with an axially chiral substituent. The C(sp)-N(sp) cross-coupling reaction makes use of silylated diazenes as diazenyl anion equivalents, and chiral ferrocene-based bisphosphine ligands act as effective supporting ligands. The resulting chiral azobenzenes bearing binaphthyl and naphthyl/phenyl backbones undergo reversible - isomerization under irradiation with LEDs of different wavelengths, highlighting their potential use in photoresponsive chiroptical materials.

Gold Nanocluster Isomerization Drives Supramolecular Transition from Heterochiral to Homochiral Helices.

The transformation of metal nanocluster (MNC)-based heterochiral assemblies into their homochiral analogues is a compelling goal inspired by the ubiquitous homochirality observed in living systems. Owing to the intricate factors governing nanomaterial chirality, the precise control of supramolecular chirality in MNCs remains rarely demonstrated. Herein, we demonstrated the coassembly behavior of AuNCs protected by 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (AuPRT) with chiral mandelic acid (MA), which revealed the formation of hybrid chiral superstructures of - and -helices in a single system.
