Purpose: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) improves patient outcomes and quality of life and can be provided virtually through hybrid CR. However, little is known about CR availability in conjunction with broadband access, a requirement for hybrid CR. This study examined the intersection of CR and broadband availability at the county level, nationwide.
Methods: Data were gathered and analyzed in 2022 from the 2019 American Community Survey, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and the Federal Communications Commission. Spatially adaptive floating catchments were used to calculate county-level percent CR availability among Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries. Counties were categorized: by CR availability, whether lowest (ie, CR deserts), medium, or highest; and by broadband availability, whether CR deserts with majority-available broadband, or dual deserts. Results were stratified by state. County-level characteristics were examined for statistical significance by CR availability category.
Results: Almost half of US adults (n = 116 325 976, 47.2%) lived in CR desert counties (1691 counties). Among adults in CR desert counties, 96.8% were in CR deserts with majority-available broadband (112 626 906). By state, the percentage of the adult population living in CR desert counties ranged from 3.2% (New Hampshire) to 100% (Hawaii and Washington, DC). Statistically significant differences in county CR availability existed by race/ethnicity, education, and income.
Conclusions: Almost half of US adults live in CR deserts. Given that up to 97% of adults living in CR deserts may have broadband access, implementation of hybrid CR programs that include a telehealth component could expand CR availability to as many as 113 million US adults.

Telehealth has been promoted as a solution to spatial healthcare access barriers, yet its role in addressing cancer care disparities remains uncertain, particularly in the context of digital divides in broadband availability and affordability. This study assessed spatial and telehealth accessibility to cancer care across 33,499 ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTA) in the United States using the two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) and two-step virtual catchment area (2SVCA) methods, respectively. Incorporating physician locations, cancer incidence, travel time based on transportation networks, and broadband coverage and subscription rates, we found that accessibility declined from urban to rural areas and was lower in ZCTA with greater socioeconomic deprivation.

Soundscapes are vital components of marine ecosystems, yet increasing anthropogenic noise is altering natural acoustic environments. This study explores the relationship between soundscape characteristics and hotspots of abundance for the Critically Endangered grey nurse shark (Carcharias taurus). Using SoundTrap hydrophones (ST600 and ST300), acoustic data was recorded at three aggregation and three non-aggregation sites off Port Stephens, Southeast Australia, between May and July 2023 to accumulate a total of over 1000 h of sound for the entire study.

Since the turn of the century, sociologists and other scholars concerned about digital inequality have most often been concerned about disparities in the quality of internet use, not necessarily the availability of internet access itself. However, the COVID-19 pandemic laid bare the fact that the internet's potential benefits to mitigating the spread of the virus were only available to those with internet access. In this visualization, I use household-level data from the American Community Survey from 2013 - 2023 (N = 10,713,204 households) to estimate a linear probability model predicting internet access by race/ethnicity, household educational attainment, and poverty status.
