The sense of vision begins in the retina, where light is detected and processed through a complex series of synaptic connections into meaningful information relayed to the brain via retinal ganglion cells. Light responses begin as tonic and graded signals in photoreceptors, later emerging from the retina as a series of spikes from ganglion cells. Processing by the retina extracts critical features of the visual world, including spatial frequency, temporal frequency, motion direction, color, contrast, and luminance. To achieve this, the retina has evolved specialized and unique synapse types. These include the ribbon synapses of photoreceptors and bipolar cells, the dendritic synapses of amacrine and horizontal cells, and unconventional synaptic feedback from horizontal cells to photoreceptors. We review these unique synapses in the retina with a focus on the presynaptic molecules and physiological properties that shape their capabilities.

Despite the functional specialization in visual cortex, there is growing evidence that the processing of chromatic and spatial visual features is intertwined. While past studies focused on visual field biases in retina and behavior, large-scale dependencies between coding of color and retinotopic space are largely unexplored in the cortex. Using a sample of male and female volunteers, we asked whether spatial color biases are shared across different human observers, and whether they are idiosyncratic for distinct areas.

Computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) systems for color fundus images play a critical role in the early detection of fundus diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, and cerebrovascular disorders. Although deep learning has substantially advanced automatic segmentation techniques in this field, several challenges persist, such as limited labeled datasets, significant structural variations in blood vessels, and persistent dataset discrepancies, which continue to hinder progress. These challenges lead to inconsistent segmentation performance, particularly for small vessels and branch regions.

Introduction: Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental visual disorder treated with occlusion or pharmacological penalization of the dominant, non-amblyopic eye in early childhood. After early childhood, efficacy of occlusion therapy is limited due to a reduction in neuronal plasticity, and no mainstay clinical treatment is available. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been hypothesized to enhance neuroplasticity in the adult brain, thereby facilitating improvements in amblyopia.
