Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess motion-defined form perception, including the association with clinical and sensory factors that may drive performance, in each eye of children with deprivation amblyopia due to unilateral cataract.
Methods: Coherence thresholds for orientation discrimination of motion-defined form were measured using a staircase procedure in 30 children with deprivation amblyopia and 59 age-matched controls. Visual acuity, stereoacuity, fusion, and interocular suppression were also measured. Fixation stability and fellow-eye global motion thresholds were measured in a subset of children.
Results: Motion-defined form coherence thresholds were elevated in 90% of children with deprivation amblyopia when viewing with the amblyopic eye and in 40% when viewing with the fellow eye. The deficit was similar in children with a cataract that had been visually significant at birth (congenital) and in children for whom the cataract appeared later in infancy or childhood (developmental). Poorer motion-defined form perception in amblyopic eyes was associated with poorer visual acuity, poorer binocular function, greater interocular suppression, and the presence of nystagmus. Fellow-eye deficits were not associated with any of these factors, but a temporo-nasal asymmetry for global motion perception in favor of nasalward motion suggested a general disruption in motion perception.
Conclusions: Deficits in motion-defined form perception are common in children with deprivation amblyopia and may reflect a problem in motion processing that relies on binocular mechanisms.

Many mobile robotics applications require robots to navigate around humans who may interpret the robot's motion in terms of social attitudes and intentions. It is essential to understand which aspects of the robot's motion are related to such perceptions so that we may design appropriate navigation algorithms. Current works in social navigation tend to strive towards a single ideal style of motion defined with respect to concepts such as comfort, naturalness, or legibility.

Humans can label and categorize objects in a visual scene with high accuracy and speed, a capacity well characterized with studies using static images. However, motion is another cue that could be used by the visual system to classify objects. To determine how motion-defined object category information is processed by the brain in the absence of luminance-defined form information, we created a novel stimulus set of "object kinematograms" to isolate motion-defined signals from other sources of visual information.

In this study, we examined (1) the presence of abnormally low scores (below 10 percentile) in various visual motion perception aspects in children with brain damage, while controlling for their cognitive developmental delay; (2) whether the risk is increased in comparison with the observation and expectation in a healthy control group and healthy population. Performance levels of 46 children with indications of brain damage (M = 7y4m, SD = 2y4m) on three visual motion perception aspects (global motion, motion speed, motion-defined form) were evaluated. We used developmental age as entry of a preliminary reference table to classify the patient's performance levels.

The HO/DO/HDO isotopomers of water are presented in terms that enable bond-flexing, bond-twist and bond-anharmonicity to be quantified during the bending (Q1), symmetric-stretch (Q2) and anti-symmetric-stretch (Q3) normal modes of vibration. Bond-flexing was detected by the presence of curved bonding and the bond-anharmonicity was detected by the presence of motion of the bond critical point (BCP) relative to the oxygen atom. These 2-D scalar measures are unable to fully describe the 3-D nature of the normal modes of vibration and therefore any susceptibility towards normal mode coupling, or to fully distinguish the three isotopomers.
