Thyroid follicular tumours may take up iodide via the sodium-iodide symporter. Knowledge of iodide uptake could then allow treatment with I-131 in dogs with high-risk tumours. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between clinically detectable iodide uptake (as determined by scintigraphy and/or thyroxine concentrations) and sodium iodide symporter immunohistochemical labelling on histologically fixed thyroid tumours. Nineteen dogs were identified who were diagnosed with thyroid carcinoma and underwent surgery from November 2017 to July 2021. All had recorded thyroid hormone concentrations and were hyperthyroid and/or underwent preoperative nuclear imaging using planar scintigraphy (technetium-99m or I-123), or I-124 PET-CT. All dogs subsequently underwent surgery to remove the thyroid mass. Twenty-two tumours were submitted for histopathologic analysis immediately following surgery, which confirmed a diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma for each tumour. Images and/or thyroid hormone concentrations were reviewed for the included cases, and tumours were sorted into an avid/functional group (group 1) and a non-avid/functional group (group 2). The tumour tissues were re-examined histologically using sodium iodide symporter (NIS) immunohistochemistry (IHC). Group 1 contained 15 avid/functional tumours. Twelve of these tumours had membranous NIS IHC labelling. Group 2 contained 7 non-avid tumours. One of these tumours had membranous NIS IHC labelling. This resulted in an overall sensitivity and specificity for identification of avid/functional tumours with membranous NIS of 80.0% and 85.7%, respectively. NIS IHC may predict ion trapping in canine follicular thyroid tumours. Further studies using iodide-based imaging are warranted to better determine the clinical utility of this diagnostic modality.

Despite the generally favorable prognosis of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) following surgery and radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy, approximately 10% of cases eventually develop resistance to RAI. This condition, known as radioiodine-refractory differentiated thyroid carcinoma (RAIR-DTC), is associated with a poor prognosis, with a 10-year survival rate of only 10% from the time of metastasis detection. The limited availability of safe and effective alternative treatments poses a significant challenge to clinical management.

A field survey was conducted in Sweden with the purpose to revisit the ground deposition of Chornobyl 137Cs and the associated ambient dose equivalent rate, H* (10), at various measuring locations in the Gävle and Älvkarleby municipalities. The specific purpose was to compare the 137Cs deposition values as measured in situ using a field portable gamma spectrometer [3″(Ø) × 3″ NaI(Tl)-crystal] with the ex situ estimates obtained from gamma spectrometry of soil cores taken at the measuring locations. An additional purpose was to re-assess the effective ecological half-times of the Cs-contribution to the H* (10) and compare with a previous assessment done for data until 2013.

Iodine is an essential trace element, and its deficiency continues to pose a significant global health burden. Reliable biomarkers such as urinary iodine concentration (UIC), thyroglobulin, thyroid volume, and breast milk iodine levels are well-established for assessing individual and population iodine status. However, mechanistic studies into iodine metabolism and distribution remain limited by the use of the radionuclide iodine-131 which imposes practical limitations on experimental design, cost, and safety.

In a carcinogenicity study with SD rats exposed to pyridachlometyl (dietary dose levels, 0, 200, 2000, 10,000 and 20,000 ppm), an increase in thyroid follicular cell (TFC) adenoma and/or carcinoma was observed in male rats at ≥ 2000 ppm but not in female rats. We evaluated the mode of action (MOA) of pyridachlometyl-induced TFC tumor formation and its relevance to humans. Pyridachlometyl was neither genotoxic, cytotoxic nor immunosuppressive based on a series of toxicity studies.
