The 87Annual Meeting of the Japanese Circulation Society (JCS2023) was held in March 2023 in Fukuoka, Japan, marking the first in-person gathering after the COVID-19 pandemic. With the theme of "New Challenge With Next Generation" the conference emphasized the development of future cardiovascular leaders and technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI). Notable sessions included the Mikamo Lecture on heart failure and the Mashimo Lecture on AI in medicine. Various hands-on sessions and participatory events were well received, promoting learning and networking. Post-event surveys showed high satisfaction among participants, with positive feedback on face-to-face interactions and the overall experience. JCS2023, attended by 17,852 participants, concluded successfully, marking a significant milestone in post-pandemic meetings, and advancing cardiovascular medicine.

Objective: We evaluated real-world treatment patterns and unmet needs associated with migraine preventive medications in Japan following the introduction of calcitonin gene-related peptide monoclonal antibodies (CGRP mAbs), focusing on persistence, switching, and adherence rates.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study analyzed JMDC (previously Japan Medical Data Center) claims data (index date: April 2021 to January 2024) for treatment-naïve patients who initiated oral migraine preventive medications (OMPMs; = 12,750) and patients initiating CGRP mAbs ( = 3,280). Persistence was defined as continuous therapy without a 60-day or longer gap.

Background: The conventional lethal triad criteria for trauma are too specific for death and, thus, inappropriate as a standard for strategic decisions. Revised lethal triad criteria were previously proposed based on a multicenter study. Positive is defined as meeting one major criterion (fibrin/fibrinogen degradation product >90 μg/mL) or two minor criteria (base excess <-3 mEq/L or temperature <36°C).

Based on the Women Physicians' Career Symposium at the 86th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Hematology, this paper explores career development and leadership among female physicians. A career encompasses not only one's professional life but also the entirety of one's life, as highlighted by Schein's concept of the "career anchor" and Hall's "protean career" theory. The discussion also emphasizes the importance of sustaining careers while navigating life events such as childbirth and childcare, alongside addressing the need to overcome unconscious bias.

Opioid analgesics are commonly prescribed after total knee and hip arthroplasty to manage pain. Rates of opioid prescribing after arthroplasty differ by country, suggesting differences in policies or surgeons' practices. We adopted a qualitative description design to explore and compare Canadian, Dutch, and Japanese orthopaedic surgeons' perceptions of facilitators and barriers to opioid reduction after total joint arthroplasty.

Males and females exhibit differences in proteome profiles associated with disease risk. However, sex-dimorphic protein quantitative trait loci (SD-pQTL) and their effects on sex differences in health disorders have not been thoroughly investigated. We conducted a sex-stratified, genome-wide association study on 2,922 proteins using data from 30,272 individuals of Caucasian ancestry from the UK Biobank and compared the estimated effects on protein levels of these variants in the men and women to identify SD-pQTLs.
