Soil is a major terrestrial carbon reservoir, and enhancing its carbon stock is a central strategy to mitigate climate change. Earth system models project a net soil carbon sink by 2100, the magnitude of which is still under debate, differing significantly between approaches. Radiocarbon-based studies often suggest a limited soil carbon accumulation capacity, but these estimates are biased by the presence of ancient, radiocarbon-free, organic carbon (aOC).

An increased risk of SPM (second primary malignancies) was reported for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma transplant ineligible (NDMM-TI) exposed to lenalidomide (Len), with the caveats that Len was often co-exposed to alkylating-agents and the studies did not exclude SyM (synchronous malignancies). We aimed to evaluate the respective SyM over SPM risks in NDMM-TI treated in front-line with Len. We conducted a high-resolution population-based cancer registry study, which allowed completeness of the primary endpoint (SyM and SPM) without reporting bias, and to guarantee a cohort more representative of real-life than clinical trials.

The clinical spectrum of Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) is varied, with wide-ranging degrees of intellectual disability, developmental delays, behavioral abnormalities, and medical features. Different types of genetic variation lead to PMS, and differing genotypes (e.g.

Systematic critical review of studies and methods assessing microbial degradation of plastics in the marine environment: evidence base and recommendations.

Sci Total Environ

August 2025

Institute of Mechanical, Process and Energy Engineering, School of Engineering and Physical Science, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

When plastic enters the marine environment it is rapidly colonised by microorganisms, and with plastic pollution in our oceans increasing, interest in studying the potential of these microorganisms to degrade plastics has also increased. The validity and reproducibility of some of these studies has however been questioned, and with an ever-increasing number of studies in this area, a critical evaluation of past work and steer for future studies is urgently needed. Here we systematically and critically review studies investigating the microbial degradation of plastics in the marine environment, critically appraising the methods and strength of evidence used to link marine microorganisms to plastic degradation, and providing recommendations for future research.
