Background: This study aimed to analyze the outcomes of patients undergoing ventral hernia repair (VHR) with a polypropylene mesh with embedded silver ions (PSM) in the context of different degrees of contamination, compared to standard conventional macroporous polypropylene mesh (PPL).
Methods: From May 2019 to October 2023, a retrospective comparative analysis of patients who underwent elective or urgent VHR with a SilverMesh (PSM group) versus standard macroporous polypropylene mesh (PPL group), based on the Spanish Hernia registry (EVEREG). The exclusion criteria were other PSM indications (groin hernia, prophylaxis) and the use of composite meshes or any material different to PPL.

Functionalization of hernia repair mesh materials with drug-releasing coatings enables local and controlled therapeutic delivery, offering promising, cutting-edge devices to prevent postoperative infection. In this study, we evaluated in vitro and in vivo two novel antibacterial coatings applied to polypropylene meshes used in surgical hernia repair. Carboxymethylcellulose/polyvinyl alcohol (CMC/PVA) microfibers combined with chlorhexidine (CHX) or rifampicin (RIF) were electrospun on both sides of the mesh, establishing 4 groups: uncoated control; CMC/PVA; CMC/PVA + CHX; CMC/PVA + RIF.

Midface fractures constitute a severe medical challenge due to their intricacy, incidence, and socioeconomic implications. The orbit and the maxillary sinus are the most prominent parts of the face and form the most common site of fracture. Reconstruction of these frequently observed fractures is necessary.

Surgical meshes are medical devices that were initially designed for hernia repair and later adopted for pelvic floor reconstructive surgeries, including pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Polypropylene (PP) is the most common material for surgical mesh, but others have been used clinically. Complications with PP surgical mesh have been attributed to several factors, including the post-implantation degradation of the surgical mesh materials.

Methods: Rabbits were randomly distributed into four groups: control rabbits without laparotomy group; sutured rabbits (SR); light-weight mesh rabbits (LWMR); and heavy-weight mesh rabbits (HWMR). The meshes were cut to a size of 10 cm in length by 1 cm in width.
