Fine particulate matter (PM ) contains carcinogens similar to those generated by tobacco smoking, which may increase the risks of developing smoking-related cancers, such as upper aerodigestive track (UADT) cancers, for both smokers and never-smokers. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the relation between ambient PM exposure and risk of UADT cancers. A population-based case-control study involving 565 incident UADT cancer cases and 983 controls was conducted in Los Angeles County from 1999 to 2004. The average residential PM concentration 1 year before the diagnosis date for cases and the reference date for controls was assessed using a chemical transport model. The association between ambient PM and the UADT cancers was estimated by unconditional logistic regression, adjusting for confounders at the individual and block-group level. Stratified analyses were conducted by sex, tobacco smoking status and UADT subsites. We also assessed the interaction between PM and tobacco smoking on UADT cancers. PM concentrations were associated with an elevated odds of UADT cancers (adjusted odds ratio = 1.21 per interquartile range [4.5 μg/m ] increase; 95% confidence interval: 1.02, 1.44). The association between PM and UADT cancers was similar across UADT subsites, sex and tobacco smoking status. The interaction between PM and tobacco smoking on UADT cancers was approximately additive on the odds scale. The effect estimate for PM and UADT cancers was similar among never smokers. Our findings support the hypothesis that exposure to PM increases the risk of UADT cancers. Improvements in air quality may reduce the risk of UADT cancers.

This report details a unique case of extensive muscular and subcutaneous metastasis in the setting of moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, diagnosed in a 70-year-old male. The patient presented with a painless ulceration of the tongue, non-specific swelling of both soft tissue on the scalp, chin and upper left arm, as well as unintentional and continued weight loss. While metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue will usually follow the classic pattern of metastasizing to the lungs, liver and bones, this case presented with broad soft tissue involvement of the scalp, skeletal muscle and subcutaneous tissue.

The Deauville criteria are recommended for PET/CT-based treatment response evaluation in extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL) but have limited prognostic value. Therefore, we conducted a retrospective study of 340 nasal-type ENKTL patients to develop new criteria (Huaxi criteria) and validate them for assessing therapeutic response and survival outcome. 80% (140/175) of the patients who did not receive any anticancer therapy after the end-of-treatment PET/CT (EOT-PET/CT) and had a progression-free survival > 24 months were randomly selected as subjects for developing Huaxi criteria.

Background: To investigate the value of pretreatment nasopharyngeal and neck magnetic resonance imaging (NN-MRI) combined with positron emission tomography (PET)/CT-guided therapy for improving survival in upper aerodigestive tract NK/T-cell lymphoma (UADT-NKTL) patients.
Methods: We performed a prospective cohort study including 171 untreated patients histologically diagnosed with UADT-NKTL, of whom 71 patients received PET/CT combined with NN-MRI and the other 100 patients received PET/CT alone. The clinical stage of every patient was classified according to the Ann Arbor and TNM staging systems.
