Objectives: Diabetes is recognized as a significant risk factor for cognitive impairment. However, this association has not been thoroughly examined using large-scale population-based datasets in the Canadian context. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential association between cognitive function and diabetes in a large population-based sample of middle-aged and older Canadians.
Methods: We utilized baseline data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (N=30,097) to test our hypotheses, using five indicators of cognitive function (animal fluency, Stroop interference, reaction time, immediate and delayed memory recall). We conducted multivariate multivariable linear regression and subsequently performed tests for moderation analysis with lifestyle factors and health status.
Results: The analysis revealed that type 2 diabetes (T2DM) was associated with lower performance on most cognitive tasks, including those assessing executive function (b=0.60, 95% CI 0.31 to 0.90), reaction time (b=16.94, 95% CI 9.18 to 24.70), immediate memory recall (b=-0.10, 95% CI -0.18 to -0.02), and delayed memory recall (b=-0.12, 95% CI -0.21 to -0.02). However, no significant association was observed between other types of diabetes and cognitive performance. Moderation effects were largely null for T2DM, with the exception of alcohol intake for reaction time, and physical activity for animal fluency.
Conclusions: The study showed that individuals with T2DM exhibit poor performance on tasks that assess executive function, reaction time, and memory. Therefore, optimizing cognitive health among individuals with T2DM should be a priority in primary care. Additionally, further studies should examine this association using longitudinal data.

Azo dyes, prevalent in various industries, including textile dyeing, food, and cosmetics, pose significant environmental and health risks due to their chemical stability and toxicity. This study introduces the synthesis and application of a copper hydrogen-π-bonded benzoate framework (Cu-HBF) and its derived marigold flower-like copper oxide (MFL-CuO) in a synergetic adsorption-photocatalytic process for efficiently removing cationic azo dyes from water, specifically crystal violet (CV), methylene blue (MB), and rhodamine B (RhB). The Cu-HBF, previously available only in single crystal form, is prepared here as a crystalline powder for the first time, using a low-cost and facile procedure, allowing its application as an adsorbent and also serving as a precursor for synthesizing well-structured copper oxide (MFL-CuO).

The quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method is a powerful approach for investigating solid surfaces in contact with various types of media, since it allows for flexible modeling of complex interfaces while maintaining an all-atom representation. The mean-field QM/MM method is an average reaction field model within the QM/MM framework. The method addresses the challenges associated with the statistical sampling of interfacial atomic configurations of a medium and enables efficient calculation of free energies.

Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) is a cytokine involved in the immune-inflammatory response. Angiotensin II (Ang II) releases inflammatory mediators from several cell types. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential of Ang II to induce mRNA expression of inflammatory mediators in primary cultured fibroblast-like cells isolated from gingival and periodontal ligament tissues. A synergistic effect of co-treatment with Ang II and Interleukin-1β (IL1β) on the mRNA expression of inflammatory mediators was explored.

We have observed the signatures of valence electron rearrangement in photoexcited ammonia using ultrafast hard x-ray scattering. Time-resolved x-ray scattering is a powerful tool for imaging structural dynamics in molecules because of the strong scattering from the core electrons localized near each nucleus. Such core-electron contributions generally dominate the differential scattering signal, masking any signatures of rearrangement in the chemically important valence electrons.
