Article Abstract

Photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis are promising ways in the utilization of solar energy. To address the low efficiency of photocatalysts and photoelectrodes, in-depth understanding of their catalytic mechanism is in urgent need. Recently, polaron is considered as an influential factor in catalysis, which brings researchers a new approach to modify photocatalysts and photoelectrodes. In this review, brief introduction of polaron is given first, followed by which models and recent experimentally observations of polarons are reviewed. Studies about roles of polarons in photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis are listed in order to provide some inspiration in exploring the mechanism and improving the efficiency of photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis.

Nanohybrid catalysts hold great promise for photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis, with significant progress still to be made. We synthesize a graphitic carbon nitride (GCN)-CeO heterojunction via electrostatic self-assembly. Characterization confirms that CeO nanocubes are uniformly anchored onto layered GCN, forming a high-quality interface with abundant active sites.

Titanium dioxide (TiO) is a benchmark photocatalyst for environmental applications, but its limited visible-light activity due to a wide band gap and fast charge recombination restricts its practical efficiency. This study presents the development of heterostructured Ag (Au)/MoS-TiO inverse opal (IO) films that synergistically integrate photonic, plasmonic, and semiconducting functionalities to overcome these limitations. The materials were synthesized via a one-step evaporation-induced co-assembly approach, embedding MoS nanosheets and plasmonic nanoparticles (Ag or Au) within a nanocrystalline TiO photonic framework.

(Sb,Bi)(S,Se)(Br,I) pnictogen chalcohalides constitute an emerging family of Van der Waals (VdW) semiconductors with remarkable potential for energy-related applications, including photovoltaics (PV), photocatalysis (PC), and photoelectrocatalysis (PEC). These ternary compounds exhibit a quasi-1D orthorhombic crystalline phase, and an electronic structure analogous to lead-halide perovskites, making them promising candidates for sustainable and high-performance energy devices. This study introduces a new versatile and adaptable synthesis methodology, which combines co-evaporation of binary chalcogenides with reactive annealing under high-pressure halide atmospheres, to fabricate the eight (Sb,Bi)(S,Se)(Br,I) chalcohalides.

In the field of photocatalytic degradation, the separation and recycle technology of powdery g-CN after usage has not been mature so far as well as the secondary pollution problems for large-scale industrial applications. In this thesis, through depositing g-CN nanosheets onto the surface of flexible carbon fiber textiles using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, separable and recyclable carbon-fiber/g-CN nanosheet array was fabricated by method. The photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and photoelectrocatalytic performance of carbon-fiber/g-CN nanosheet array are studied.
