Article Abstract

Academia often fails to recognize the important work that supports its functioning, such as mentoring and teaching performed by postdoctoral researchers. This is a particular problem for early-career researchers, but opportunities exist to improve the status quo.

Computational modeling for PPE filtration: Informed by material characterization, microbial penetration, and particle mechanics.

J Occup Environ Hyg

September 2025

Division of Biology, Chemistry, and Materials Science, Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories, US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

This work assesses the current characterization framework of single-use personal protective equipment (PPE) per recognized consensus standards and presents a novel quantitative approach to refining characterization of barrier materials and predicting PPE performance. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and image analysis software (Diameter J) were used to examine the microscopic fiber and pore structure of filter layers of surgical N95 filtering facepiece respirators, before and after exposure to chemicals used in decontamination modalities (vaporized hydrogen peroxide or ozone). The effect of porosity on penetration was assessed by bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) testing.

E-tailers such as Amazon and Tmall can accurately recognize consumer interest in product categories and grasp current consumer trends through product recommendation algorithms and data-driven analysis. In this study, we develop a game-theoretic model to investigate the encroachment and information sharing decisions considering data-driven marketing (DDM). Our outcomes reveal that the manufacturer has the incentive to reduce the wholesale price to incentivize the e-tailer to increase the DDM effort when the spillover effect is high and the marginal cost is low.

Significant progress has been made in applying deep learning for the automatic diagnosis of skin lesions. However, most models remain unexplainable, which severely hinders their application in clinical settings. Concept-based ante-hoc interpretable models have the potential to clarify the decision-making process of diagnosis by learning high-level, human-understandable concepts, while they can only provide numerical values of conceptual contributions.

c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs), a subfamily of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), are key mediators of cellular responses to environmental stress, inflammation, and apoptotic signals. The three isoforms-JNK1, JNK2, and JNK3 exhibit both overlapping and isoform-specific functions. While JNK1 and JNK2 are broadly expressed across tissues and regulate immune signaling, cell proliferation, and apoptosis, JNK3 expression is largely restricted to the brain, heart, and testis, where it plays a crucial role in neuronal function and survival.

Objectives: Dental trauma is a frequent injury in contact sports such as handball an basketball. This study aimed to evaluate preventive measures in dental traumatology and assess the knowledge of medical teams in elite German handball and basketball.

Material And Methods: From March to June 2024, supervisors of 1st and 2nd German Bundesliga handball (HB) and basketball (BB) teams were invited via email to complete an online questionnaire (Socey Survey).
