It is very important to keep track of decreases in the bone mineral density (BMD) of elderly people since it can be correlated with the risk of incidence of major osteoporotic fractures leading to fatal injuries. Even though dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the one of the most precise measuring techniques used to quantify BMD, most patients have restricted access to this machine due to high cost of DXA equipment, which is also rarely distributed to local clinics. Meanwhile, the conventional X-rays, which are commonly used for visualizing conditions and injuries due to their low cost, combine the absorption of both soft and bone tissues, consequently limiting its ability to measure BMD. Therefore, we have proposed a specialized automated smart system to quantitatively predict BMD based on a conventional X-ray image only by reducing the soft tissue effect supported by the implementation of a convolutional autoencoder, which is trained using proposed synthesized data to generate grayscale values of bone tissue alone. From the enhanced image, multiple features are calculated from the hip X-ray to predict the BMD values. The performance of the proposed method has been validated through comparison with the DXA value, which shows high consistency with correlation coefficient of 0.81 and mean absolute error of 0.069 g/cm.

Objectives: Bone scintigraphy is a sensitive imaging method to evaluate patients with suspected osteonecrosis. We assessed the diagnostic performance of combined bone single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) (CBS) in patients with known rheumatic disease or other connective tissue disorders and clinical suspicion of osteonecrosis compared to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Methods: This prospective diagnostic accuracy study included 70 patients with clinical suspicion of osteonecrosis in any bone who underwent a planar triple-phase bone scan along with a regional SPECT/CT (CBS) and regional MRI.

Obturator hernia is a rare but clinically significant cause of intestinal obstruction, particularly in elderly, thin women due to their anatomical predisposition. We present the case of a 79-year-old female with a history of hypertension and hip arthroplasty who developed acute abdominal pain, vomiting, and absence of flatus and bowel movements. Imaging with contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a right obturator hernia containing a small bowel loop, causing intestinal obstruction without signs of ischemia.

Objective: The present study aimed to compare the accuracy of the Paprosky Classification of Femoral Bone Loss using plain radiographs and two-dimensional computed tomography (2D CT) images with the femoral defect observed intraoperatively by the surgeon.
Methods: There were 14 hip surgeons from the same hospital who classified 80 patients with an indication for revision hip arthroplasty according to Paprosky based on plain radiographs in anteroposterior views of the pelvis and 2D CT images, reconstructed in the axial, coronal, and sagittal planes. We compared this data with the intraoperative findings of femoral bone loss by the same surgeons.
