Genome editing technologies, particularly clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-Cas9, have transformed biomedical research by enabling precise genetic modifications. Due to its efficiency, cost-effectiveness and versatility, CRISPR has been widely applied across various stages of research, from fundamental biological investigations in preclinical models to potential therapeutic interventions. In nephrology, CRISPR represents a groundbreaking tool for elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying kidney diseases and developing innovative therapeutic approaches.

Introduction: Venous thromboembolism (VTE), mainly deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), persists as a critical contributor to hospital-acquired mortality. Despite its largely preventable nature, early 2024 data from Bon Secours Hospital in Cork revealed alarmingly low compliance with VTE prophylaxis protocol.
Aim: This study evaluated the implementation efficacy of VTE risk assessment and prophylaxis in adult hospitalised patients at Bon Secours Hospital, Cork, according to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines.

Background: Pathogenic responses against self and foreign antigens in systemic autoimmunity and infection, respectively, engage similar immunologic components, thus lacking distinguishing diagnostic biomarkers. Herein, we tested whether whole-blood transcriptome analysis discriminates autoimmune from infectious diseases.
Methods: We applied nested cross-validation methodology to tune and validate random forests, k-nearest neighbors, and support vector machines, using a new preprocessing method on 22 publicly available datasets, including 594 patients with a broad spectrum of systemic autoimmune diseases and 615 patients with diverse viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections.
: Sepsis (life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection) causes millions of deaths worldwide annually. Sepsis-induced changes in brain regulatory functions remain understudied. Previous work demonstrated that cecal ligation and puncture (CLP, a murine model of sepsis) affected physiologic variables and serum cytokines and hormone levels.

The efficacy of biologics, such as peptide and protein drugs, is often limited by their short half-lives in vivo, necessitating repeated infusions to maintain therapeutic effects. Here, we demonstrate that long-lived CAR T cells can be leveraged as a versatile platform for long-term delivery of biologics. Our recent findings show that the depletion of BCOR and ZC3H12A induces GD2 CAR T cells into an immortal-like and functional state, which we have termed GD2T cells.
