Article Abstract

The health supplement industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world, but there is a lack of suitable analytical methods for the determination of active compounds in health supplements such as peptides. The present work describes an implementation of contactless conductivity detection on microchip technology as a new strategy for the electrophoretic determination of L-carnosine in complex health supplement formulations without pre-concentration and derivatization steps. The best results were obtained in the case of +1.00 kV applied for 20 s for injection and +2.75 kV applied for 260 s for the separation step. Under the selected conditions, a linear detector response of 5 × 10 to 5 × 10 M was achieved. L-carnosine retention time was 61 s. The excellent reproducibility of both migration time and detector response confirmed the high precision of the method. The applicability of the method was demonstrated by the determination of L-carnosine in three different samples of health supplements. The recoveries ranged from 91 to 105%. Subsequent analysis of the samples by CE-UV-VIS and HPLC-DAD confirmed the accuracy of the obtained results.

Hydroxyapatite (Hap) is a prominent biomaterial used as an effective implant material in bone tissue engineering, but its use presents some points of weakness in bone regeneration efficiency. Different biofunctionalization strategies have been utilized to increase the regenerative Hap capacities. Carnosine (Car) or β-alanyl-l-histidine dipeptide has received much attention due to its beneficial effects in osteoarticular diseases and bone tissue healing.

Nutrition is of paramount importance during early development, since suboptimal growth in this period of life is linked to adverse long- and mid-term outcomes. This is particularly relevant for preterm infants, who fail to thrive during the first weeks of life and develop extrauterine growth restriction (EUGR). This group of premature babies represents an interesting population to investigate using a metabolomic approach to optimize nutritional intake.

Background: The topical application of a carnosine gel may increase intramuscular carnosine concentrations and thereby improve exercise performance. This study investigated the effect of a topical carnosine gel on intermittent high-intensity exercise performance in rugby sevens players.

Methods: Seven world-class rugby sevens players (body mass: 97.

Determining strategies used by enzymes to achieve enormous rate enhancements has been a central goal in biochemical research. The abilities to form catalytic competent reactive conformations for enzyme-substrate complexes with well-positioned residues and to lower activation barriers through transition state (TS) stabilization are two accepted mechanisms. Enzymes might have evolved to possess other unrecognized strategies to achieve rate enhancements, and identification of such strategies is of fundamental importance.
