The evidence base supporting the adoption of simulation in health care has not kept pace with the rapid growth of the field. Although there is a growing body of research in health care simulation, many published studies describe small-scaled, underpowered projects with insufficient methodological rigor to inform our understanding of simulation. This problem is indicative of a larger challenge: the lack of focused, cohesive programs of research designed to advance the science of simulation.

A web-based quantitative survey tested pet owners' preferences and willingness-to-pay for canine anti-pruritus therapies, and for improvements in pruritus-related quality of life. This survey was designed using findings from recent research into quality of life in pruritus, interviews with pet owners and veterinarians, and clinical and cost data. The survey was completed by 251 dog owners in the United Kingdom.

Categorization systems for tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) infection lack consistency in classifying disease severity. To evaluate the need for a standard, consensus-based categorisation system for TBEV infection across subtypes, we gathered an expert panel of clinicians and scientists with diverse expertise in TBEV infection. Consensus was sought using the Delphi technique, which consisted of 2 web-based survey questionnaires and a final, virtual, consensus-building exercise.

Background: Interpretation of variants of uncertain significance (VUSs) remains a challenge in the care of patients with inherited cardiovascular diseases (CVDs); 56% of variants within CVD risk genes are VUS, and machine learning algorithms trained upon large data resources can stratify VUS into higher versus lower probability of contributing to a CVD phenotype.

Methods: We used ClinVar pathogenic/likely pathogenic and benign/likely benign variants from 47 CVD genes to build a predictive model of variant pathogenicity utilizing measures of evolutionary constraint, deleteriousness, splicogenicity, local pathogenicity, cardiac-specific expression, and population allele frequency. Performance was validated using variants for which the ClinVar pathogenicity assignment changed.

Analysis of wastewater treatment plant data identifies the drivers of PFAS enrichment in foams.

The concept of incorporating foam fractionation in aerated bioreactors at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) for the removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has recently been proposed. The extent of PFAS enrichment in aerated bioreactors' foams, as indicated by enrichment factors (EFs), has been observed to vary widely. Laboratory evidence has shown that factors affecting PFAS enrichment in foams include conductivity, surfactant concentrations and initial PFAS concentrations.
