Background: Regarding trochanteric hip fractures, one type of posterior coronal fragments was described as the "banana-shaped fragment", while the impact of the banana-shaped fragment on mechanical stability has not been further studied. The current study investigated the association between the banana-shaped fragment and mechanical complications after surgery.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 273 patients treated by proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) in the full analysis. The age, the sex, the fracture side, the follow-up time, the American Society of Anesthesiologists classification, the operators, the fracture classification, the tip-apex distance, the blade positions, the reduction quality and the bone mineral density were analyzed in relation to mechanical complications, through univariate and multivariate approaches.
Results: Mechanical complications happened in 33 patients. The banana-shaped fragment (adjusted odds ratio 5.240, 95% CI 2.172 to 12.641; p < 0.001), the tip-apex distance and the reduction quality showed significant association with mechanical complications in both univariate and multivariate analysis. Moreover, for 118 patients with the banana-shaped fragment, we found that the use of wire cerclage couldn't significantly lower the rates of mechanical complications (p = 0.648).
Conclusions: The banana-shaped fragment had a negative impact on mechanical stability of trochanteric hip fractures treated by PFNA. In the perioperative period, the BSF should be carefully evaluated, and its specific handling deserves further study.

Objective: To summarize the characteristics of posterior coronal banana-shaped fragments and its research progress in treatment of intertrochanteric femoral fracture with cephalomedullary nail, provide valuable reference for clinical practice.
Methods: Relevant domestic and foreign literature was extensively reviewed to summarize the history, anatomical structure of posterior coronal banana-shaped fragments, and the need for reduction and fixation, the influence on the stability of cephalomedullary nail, and the remedies.
Results: The posterior coronal banana-shaped fragments refers to the second level fracture line of the intertrochanteric femoral fracture, involving four anatomical structures, namely, the posterior part of the greater trochanter, the intertrochanteric crest, the lesser trochanter, and the posteromedial cortex.

Rational design of unnatural amino acid building blocks capable of stabilizing predictable secondary structures similar to protein fragments is pivotal for foldamer chemistry/catalysis. Here, we introduce novel β-amino acid building blocks: [1S,2R,4R]exoCDA and [1S,2S,4R]endoCDA, derived from the abundantly available R(+)-camphor, which is traditionally known for its medicinal value. Further, we demonstrate that the homooligomers of exoCDA adopt 6-strand conformation, which switches to a robust 10/12-helix simply by inserting flexible β-hGly spacer at alternate positions (1 : 1 β-hGly/exoCDA heterooligomers), as evident by DFT-calculations, solution-state NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.

Having examined 19 great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) hunted in Lithuania, sarcocysts were found in the muscles of two birds. Sarcocysts detected were examined using light microscopy (LM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and 18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, ITS1, cox1, and rpoB sequence comparison. Based on the molecular analysis, mainly of the ITS1 region, sarcocysts were identified as Sarcocystis halieti.

Four seven-nuclearity 3d-4f heterometallic cluster {FeLnO} substituted polyoxometalates (HPz)KFeLn(μ-O)(B-α-GeWO)(GeWO)· xHO (1-Ln, Pz = piperazine, Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er for x = 27, 25, 25, 24, respectively) have been hydrothermally prepared and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectrometry, thermogravimetric analyses, elemental analyses, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that 1-Ln contain an unprecedented banana-shaped polyanion constructed from an iron-lanthanide heterometallic {FeLnO} cluster, two trilacunary {B-α-GeWO} units, and one hexalacunary {GeWO} fragment. The magnetic susceptibility surveying proved the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling in 1-Ln.
