The design of continuous thickeners and clarifiers is commonly based on the solid flux theory. Batch sedimentation experiments conducted with solid concentrations still provide useful information for their application. The construction of models for the velocity of settling allows the estimation of the flux of solids throughout time, which can, in turn, be used to find the area of the units required to achieve a given solid concentration in the clarified stream. This paper addresses the numerical treatment of data obtained from batch sedimentation experiments of calcium carbonate particles. We propose a systematic framework to fit a model that is capable of representing the process features that involve (i) the numerical differentiation of data to generate initial estimates for the instantaneous velocity of settling; (ii) the integration of a differential equation to fit the model for the velocity of settling; and (iii) the assessment of the quality of the fit using common statistical indicators. The model used for demonstration has a theoretical basis combined with an empirical component to account for the effect of the particle concentrations and their state of aggregation. The values of the numerical parameters obtained are related to the characteristic dimensions of the aggregates and their mass-length fractal dimensions.

The photosensitive sp and hyperactive sp domains of 2D-film-like graphene oxide (GO) play critical roles in biogeochemical processes. However, the underlying toxicity mechanism of the specific effects of GO on Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) remains unknown.

Persistent and mobile trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in urban stormwater are difficult to remove through sedimentation- or sorption-based treatment and pose a risk to aquatic ecosystems and drinking water supplies. We demonstrate that the chemical oxidant peroxydisulfate (PDS) can be activated by shrimp shell biochar at pH 7 to form reactive species that selectively react with widespread stormwater contaminants. Of 11 TrOCs tested, oxidative transformation was observed for 1,3-diphenylguanidine, 2-hydroxybenzothiazole, 1H-benzotriazole, 5-methyl-benzotriazole, and diuron during water treatment with biochar and PDS.

Objective: This manuscript describes an innovative, non-destructive, high-throughput method for the quantification of aluminum hydroxide in aluminum-adjuvanted vaccines, eliminating the need of reagents and providing real-time results. The method is based on a spectrophotometric principle, and several model proteins were studied and tested with the aim to simulate the behavior of aluminum-adjuvanted antigens.
Methods: As a proof of concept, the MenB vaccine was used, and the titration of aluminum hydroxide (AH) with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was used as an orthogonal reference, as it is one of the current release methods for the content determination of aluminum-hydroxide-adjuvanted vaccine drug products (DPs).

The paper presents a proposal to modify a field method of testing the condition of activated sludge using a 30-min volume of sludge (settling test). To verify the validity of the modified method of testing the condition of activated sludge, field tests were performed in two onsite wastewater treatment plants. In these plants, the reaction chambers were fed by gravity from the primary sedimentation tank throughout the day.
