The COVID-19 pandemic has urged the need to set up, conduct and analyze high-quality epidemiological studies within a very short time-scale to provide timely evidence on influential factors on the pandemic, e.g. COVID-19 severity and disease course. The comprehensive research infrastructure developed to run the German National Pandemic Cohort Network within the Network University Medicine is now maintained within a generic clinical epidemiology and study platform NUKLEUS. It is operated and subsequently extended to allow efficient joint planning, execution and evaluation of clinical and clinical-epidemiological studies. We aim to provide high-quality biomedical data and biospecimens and make its results widely available to the scientific community by implementing findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability - i.e. following the FAIR guiding principles. Thus, NUKLEUS might serve as role model for FAIR and fast implementation of clinical epidemiological studies within the setting of University Medical Centers and beyond.

Background: Limited data are available on relative survival (RS) among cancer survivors enrolled in private cancer insurance in Japan. Additionally, the incidence of second primary cancers or recurrences, as applicable, after a certain period remains unclear.
Methods: We analyzed 8,846 cancer survivors, including carcinoma in situ, aged 15-79 years, enrolled in private cancer insurance between April 2005 and September 2021, and diagnosed before April 2022.

Sickle cell disease is characterized by various forms of hemoglobin that interfere with hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) testing, which is commonly used to diagnose and monitor diabetes. This interference puts patients with sickle cell disease at risk of inaccurate monitoring and misdiagnosis due to improperly planned HbA1c testing. Despite awareness of these issues, there is still disagreement regarding the most appropriate method of measuring HbA1c in patients with sickle cell disease, along with a lack of clear guidance on using fructosamine as an alternative marker in patients with diabetes and sickle cell disease.

Light simulations hold great potential for advancing optical techniques in neuroscience. They facilitate the in-silico refinement of optical stimulator designs and enable simulations of optical recordings from computational brain models, aiding neuroscience in forming a mechanistic understanding of brain circuitry. However, many published light models are inaccessible due to unavailable source code and documentation or are impractical due to excessive computational demands.

Background: For clinical care and research, knowledge graphs with patient data can be enriched by extracting parameters from a knowledge graph and then using them as inputs to compute new patient features with pure functions. Systematic and transparent methods for enriching knowledge graphs with newly computed patient features are of interest. When enriching the patient data in knowledge graphs this way, existing ontologies and well-known data resource standards can help promote semantic interoperability.

In the digital age, online teacher professional development (TPD) has become a key strategy for enhancing instructional quality and ensuring equitable access to continuous learning. This research compares and analyzes Chinese online teacher professional development (TPD) with the United States over a period of ten years, from 2014 to 2024. This study uses a mixed-methods approach based on policy documents, structured surveys, and interviews to investigate how governance regimes influence TPD outcomes for fair education.
