Article Abstract

The anatomy of the paranasal sinuses is complex with multiple anatomic variants that can predispose patients to disease. Knowledge of this complex anatomy is important not only for successful treatment but to also avoid complications at the time of surgery. This article will review the anatomy with emphasis on a variety of clinically important anatomic variants.

Anatomical Risk Factors for Portal Vein Complications Following Right Hepatectomy in Living Donors.

Ann Surg

September 2025

Division of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation, Department of Surgery, Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Objective: To determine the incidence, clinical outcomes, and anatomical risk factors of portal vein (PV)-related complications after right lobe donor hepatectomy (RLDH).

Summary Background Data: With the increase in living donor liver transplantation, large-scale studies on donor morbidity have been conducted to ensure donor safety. However, reports evaluating PV-related complications following right hepatectomy in living donors are lacking.

A Novel Case of Variant and Nonimmune Hydrops Fetalis: A Case Report.

Case Rep Genet

September 2025

Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, University of California, Irvine, California, USA.

Nonimmune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) refers to the pathologic accumulation of fluid within the fetus due to causes other than red cell alloimmunization and now accounts for up to 90% of fetal hydrops cases. Fetal hydrops is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and the exact prognosis is largely dependent on the underlying etiology. The most common etiologies include cardiovascular causes and chromosomal or genetic abnormalities.

Background: Gluteus maximus (GMax) tenotomy is a well described technique to improve femoral and/or acetabular exposure during the Kocher Langenbeck approach. Branches of the first femoral perforator artery (1FPA) are frequently encountered and may be injured during the tenotomy, causing bleeding and obscuration of surgical field. The understanding of vascular anatomy around GMax insertion is poor.

Purpose: Recent advancements in medical technologies have made trans-arterial treatment of breast cancer feasible. Consequently, understanding the vascular anatomies of breast cancers and axillary lymph node metastases has become indispensable for sophisticated treatments. The aim of this study was to determine the vascular anatomy of the breast, which is crucial for trans-arterial chemoembolization in patients with breast cancer.

Thyroid Foramen: Prevalence and CT Morphology.

Acad Radiol

September 2025

Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, Gunma University Graduate School of Medicine, 3-39-22 Showa-machi, Maebashi, Gunma 371-8511, Japan (S.K., Y.K., Y.T.).

Rationale And Objectives: The thyroid foramen (TF) is a congenital anatomical variant of the thyroid cartilage, characterized by a small opening that may transmit neurovascular structures. Although benign, TF can be misinterpreted on imaging as a cartilage fracture or tumor invasion, and may pose a surgical risk if unrecognized. Despite these potential implications, TF remains under-recognized in routine radiological practice.
