Article Abstract

Objectives: Since interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pivotal proinflammatory cytokine implicated in the pathogenesis of giant cell arteritis (GCA), we aimed to determine the potential association of the functional IL6 -174 G/C polymorphism with GCA as well as if the single base change variation at the promoter region in the human IL-6 gene may account for differences in the clinical spectrum of GCA between cranial and extracranial large vessel vasculitis (LVV)-GCA.

Methods: The IL6 -174 G/C polymorphism (rs1800795) was genotyped in 191 patients with biopsy-proven GCA who had typical cranial manifestations of the disease, 109 patients with extracranial LVV-GCA, without cranial ischaemic manifestations of GCA, and 877 ethnically matched unaffected controls. A comparative study was carried out between patients with cranial and extracranial LVV-GCA and controls.

Results: No significant differences in genotype and allele frequencies of IL6 -174 G/C polymorphism were found between the whole cohort of GCA patients and healthy controls. It was also the case when cranial and extracranial LVV-GCA were compared or when each of these subgroups was compared to controls. Moreover, no significant results in genotype and allele frequencies of IL6 -174 G/C polymorphism were disclosed when the whole cohort of GCA patients were stratified according to the presence of polymyalgia rheumatica, severe ischaemic manifestations, including permanent visual loss and peripheral arteriopathy, and HLA-DRB1*04:01 status.

Conclusions: Our results show that the IL6 -174 G/C polymorphism does not influence the phenotypic expression of GCA.

Background: As inflammatory processes may be involved in the pathogenesis of diabetic distal sensorimotor polyneuropathy (DSPN), the first aim of the present study was to determine the clinical characteristics of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with distal sensorimotor polyneuorpathy (DSPN). Next goal was to investigate inflammatory biomarkers, insulin-like growth factor- 1 and lipid profile in these patients. Finally, we aimed to compare the renal function in these patients.

Context: Low-grade inflammation (LGI) and oxidative stress (OS) are key features in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), but the interplay between these factors and genetic makeup in PCOS pathogenesis remains unclear.

Objective: This study investigated OS indicators, sub-inflammation, and their correlations in women with hyperandrogenic and insulin-resistant PCOS, examining the relationship with WNT3 gene expression.

Methodology: A case-control study included 270 age-matched women (135 with PCOS and 135 healthy controls).

Background: Prostate cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in men globally. Chronic inflammation is a major contributor to the development of cancer, with interleukins as key players in regulating inflammatory pathways. This study aims to explore the association between IL1, IL6, IL10, IL16, and IL28 gene polymorphisms and the risk of prostate cancer in the Iraqi population.

The Role of Cytokine Gene Polymorphisms in Rehabilitation Outcome After Traumatic Brain Injury.

Cells

Laboratory of Molecular Medicine and Biotechnology, IRCCS Fondazione Don Carlo Gnocchi ONLUS, 20148 Milan, Italy.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects millions of people worldwide and often results in long-term disabilities. Clinical outcomes vary widely even among patients with similar injury severity, partly due to systemic neuroinflammatory responses mediated by pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Genetic polymorphisms in cytokine-coding genes may influence cytokine expression, thereby affecting rehabilitation and prognosis.

Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes a deterioration of the immune system. Changes in cytokine levels are seen in HIV infection and contribute to the pathogenesis of the disease. This study evaluated cytokine levels and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of genes associated with HIV infection and the development of comorbidities.
