Article Abstract

A Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, catalase-negative, fructose-dependent strain (W13) was isolated from the gut of honeybee (). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing indicated that strain W13 represents a distinct line of descent within the genus , with the closest neighbours being BCRC 81240 (98.9 % sequence similarity) and DSM 19113 (96.8 % sequence similarity). Comparative sequencing of the additional phylogenetic markers and confirmed the 16S rRNA gene tree topology. The complete genome of strain W13 consisted of 1 292 712 bp with a G+C content of 48.3 mol%. Pairwise comparisons of the average nucleotide identity values and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between the genomes of W13 and its close phylogenetic neighbours, BCRC 81240 and DSM 19113, resulted in 76.2-84.1 % and 20.2-27.6 %, respectively. The main cellular fatty acids of strain W13 were C, C  9 and C  7. Thus, we propose a novel species within the genus , with the name sp. nov. and the type strain is W13 (= NBRC 115637=BCRC 81365).

Arthropods commonly harbour maternally-transmitted bacterial symbionts that manipulate host biology. Multiple heritable symbionts can co-infect the same individual, allowing these host-restricted bacteria to engage in cooperation or conflict, which can ultimately affect host phenotype. The spider Mermessus fradeorum is infected with up to five heritable symbionts: Rickettsiella (R), Tisiphia (T), and three strains of Wolbachia (W1-3).

High-energy structural materials (ESMs) integrate a high energy density with rapid energy release, offering promising applications in advanced technologies. In this study, a novel dual-phase TiZrWMo high-entropy alloy (HEA) was synthesized and evaluated as a potential ESM. The alloy exhibited a body-centered cubic (BCC) matrix with Mo-W-rich BCC precipitates of varying sizes, which increased proportionally with the W content.

Chemical investigations of a methanolic extract of the twigs of Vernonia amygdalina Delile (Asteraceae) resulted in the isolation and identification of three previously undescribed highly oxygenated Δ stigmastane-type steroids namely vernonins U-W (1-3) along with six known compounds (4-9). The structural characterization of all the isolated compounds has been conducted via comprehensive 1D and 2D-NMR spectroscopy as well as HRMS. The seven steroidal derivatives 1-7 were evaluated for their antiplasmodial activity against the chloroquine-resistant strain P.

The new viral strains of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) are continuously rising, becoming more virulent, and transmissible. Therefore, the development of new antiviral drugs is essential. Due to its significant role in the viral life cycle of SARS-CoV-2, the main protease (Mpro) enzyme is a leading target for antiviral drug design.

The bacterial strain AP-MA-4 isolated from the marine dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum (KCTC AG60911), was subjected to a taxonomic analysis. Cells of strain AP-MA-4 were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, optimum growth at 20 °C, pH 7.0, in the presence of 5% (w/v) NaCl.
